Grande plage
France · Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
The Grande Plage of La Ciotat, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a long stretch of fine sand bordered by the road and the breakwaters. It is a popular spot for experienced riders when the southeast wind blows strong, with nice waves in front of the breakwaters.
The beach is narrow, leaving little room to set up gear, especially in summer when kiting is prohibited within 300 meters of the shore. Local schools offer a boat to go further out and ride peacefully.
The atmosphere is lively with windsurfers and kitesurfers when conditions are good, in a beautiful bay voted among the most beautiful in the world.

The main wind comes from the southeast, it's a side-on perfect for the Grande Plage oriented northwest, generating nice waves in front of the breakwaters when it picks up. In pure south, it becomes more onshore direct and technical near the shore, with a risk of gusts due to the road and buildings.
The navigation area extends offshore after 300m, accessible by boat with schools to avoid crowds and breaking waves. Launching is done from the sandy beach, but it's shallow at first, watch your feet. Tense launching on the esplanade in winter when the beach disappears with high tide.
No major impact from tides on the water surface, but in summer strict prohibition near the beach, dedicated surf zone between restaurant La Vague and the west breakwater to respect. Spot shared with windsurfers, stay vigilant for crossings.
