Topanga Beach, located in Topanga Canyon west of Santa Monica along the Pacific Coast Highway, is a popular spot for intermediate riders due to its stable thermal wind. The beach offers easy access from Los Angeles and a typical California coastal vibe with its moderate waves. It's a place where locals come to enjoy regular sessions, especially in the summer.
The spot is near Topanga Point, an exposed point break that works well year-round due to its consistency. With food available on-site, it's convenient for a full day. The best months are April to September, although data also indicates January to April and November-December as acceptable.

The ideal wind comes from the W, side-on or side-shore relative to the north-south oriented beach, creating stable conditions for navigation. The local thermal wind often blows consistently, making the spot acceptable even when it's not perfect. The usual winds come from N, SW, NW, NNW, with a preference for the W which aligns perfectly with the beach.
The launch area is small, so precision is needed for takeoff and landing. The water presents chop, small and medium waves due to swells from the W or WSW, influenced by tides. Navigation is possible along the entire beach, but stay clear of rocky areas. Tides have little effect on the spot, which works at all times, with a preference for mid-tide for better wave shape.
Local peculiarity: the swell can be jumbled on the beachbreaks, but cleaner at the point. Beware of patchy winds offshore, and mixed swell that makes the water unstable. Extensive navigation zones along the coast, but launching remains limited.
Ideal conditions are a wind from the W at 15-25 kts, side-on, with moderate swell for manageable chop. Stable thermal wind in the afternoon, especially April-September.
The water state is chop with small to medium waves, due to groundswells from the W. The beachbreaks are raw with onshore early, cleaner mid-morning. Typical swell 1-3 ft, sometimes up to 4-6 ft in winter.
Currents are generally moderate along the coast, influenced by tides and swell. Beware of shore currents near the rocks and the point. Tides vary from 0.5 to 1.5m, with no major impact on navigation.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 11m² in light thermal wind, or 7-9m² when it picks up with the swell. Adjust according to your weight and the chop.
The wind regime is dominated by the local thermal wind, stable and consistent, typically blowing from the W at moderate strength. Common directions are N, SW, NW, NNW, with sessions possible from 10-15 kts. The wind can be patchy offshore but steady onshore.
The climate is Mediterranean with mild temperatures year-round, around 15-20°C in winter and up to 25°C in summer. The best months for kitesurfing are April to September, with stable and sunny weather. In winter, storms bring more swell but variable winds.
La profondeur est progressive avec un fond sableux mêlé de rochers. On a pied près du bord, mais vite profond au large.
The water remains cold year-round, around 14-18°C. A 3/2mm wetsuit is required even in summer.
