Jetties
États-Unis · Massachusetts
Jetties Beach, located on the north coast of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, offers a unique setting protected by the large jetty wall that forms the entrance to the harbor. It is a spot favored by local riders for its consistent wind coming from the north and its laid-back atmosphere, although the beach is very crowded with families and bathers in the summer.
The name Jetties comes from the large rocky jetty that extends northward, creating a significant sandbar that mitigates the impact of waves coming from the ocean. The result is softer and mellower waves, perfect for jumping and trying your first difficult turns on ocean-edge waves.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
Jetties Beach is oriented to the north, which means it works with almost all winds coming from northern directions (N, NE, NW). The optimal wind is NE, but directions N, NW, E, SW, W are also sailable. The wind orientation relative to the beach is mainly side-on or onshore depending on the exact direction, providing an ideal water state for jumping.
The water state is generally chop with mellower waves thanks to the sandbar that protects the area. At low tide, significant sandbars become accessible and can form temporary islands, altering the riding area. Launching is done directly from the beach, with public parking right in front of the entrance. Care should be taken in the launch area as the beach is very crowded with bathers.
Local features include the presence of the large rocky jetty that should be avoided as it is covered with barnacles and very dangerous if touched. The beach is wide and flat, ideal for walking and searching for shells, but nesting areas of shorebirds should be respected.
