Bandon Beach, located in Bandon on the southern coast of Oregon, is an exposed spot that attracts kiters for its long stretches of sand and consistent waves. It is a favorite among locals for its consistency in surf and wind, although summer can be calmer. There is a beach break with both left and right waves, ideal for combining kite and surf.
The spot stretches over a wide and uncrowded beach, perfect for downwind sessions from north to south. Conditions vary with tides and Pacific swells, offering a mix of powerful waves and flatter areas depending on the day.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
Main winds come from the north or northwest in summer, creating a perfect side-on on this west-facing beach. In winter, south winds dominate, more onshore and gusty. Launching is easy on the wide sand, preferably to the north of the spot to go downwind to the south while chaining waves. The water is choppy to wavy, with waves from 1 to 4 meters depending on west or northwest swells. Be cautious of launch areas near the Coquille River, where you should avoid fishermen and choose a clear space. The best sessions occur with cross-offshore wind, typical of local forecasts.
Ideal conditions are with cross-offshore northwest winds at 15-25 kts, on a moderate west swell for rideable waves without excessive chop.
The water is generally wavy due to Pacific swells, with left and right beach break waves. It becomes more choppy in strong winds, excellent for surf kiting. Swell periods of 9-14 seconds provide the best waves.
Currents are moderate, influenced by tides and the nearby Coquille River flow. They remain manageable but can accelerate near the mouth, especially at low tide. Check local tide tables to anticipate.
Opt for 9 to 12 m² sizes in typical winds of 15-25 kts, and 7-9 m² for stronger days in winter.
The wind regime is dominated by northwest winds in summer, consistent and side-shore, while south winds prevail in winter for more intense sessions. Strengths vary from 15 to 25 kts, with patches sometimes unstable near the coast. Avoid northeast winds, which are too offshore.
The coastal climate of Oregon is cool and humid year-round, with temperatures around 10-15°C in summer and 5-10°C in winter. Rain is frequent, especially from November to March, but clear wind days are perfect for kiting. The best months are variable, with a current score of 44/100 and winds at 23.1 kts.
The depth gradually increases from a sandy bottom near the shore, with possible footings in the first meters at low tide. Perfect for beach breaks without major rocks.
Water temperature hovers around 11-12°C year-round, cooler in winter around 10°C and slightly warmer in summer at 13°C. A full wetsuit is mandatory.
