Longrock / Marazion, near Penzance in Cornwall, is a popular spot for local kiters due to its varied conditions and stunning views of St Michaels Mount. Located on Mounts Bay, the beach offers a mix of waves and flat water depending on the wind direction, in a spectacular setting.
The beach is private, managed by St Aubyn’s Estates, but accessible to individual kiters. Schools and instructors must obtain prior permission. It is a lively place in season with a friendly atmosphere.
Ocean High, a long-established kitesurfing school, offers lessons and rentals from Marazion Beach.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The best sessions occur 3/4 hours either side of low tide, when there is enough beach for take-off and launching. At high tide, avoid: the beach shrinks significantly and space becomes very limited. Launching usually takes place from Marazion towards Folly Fields near St Michaels Mount, where kiters concentrate.
For E or SE winds, navigate west towards Penzance. The ideal directions are ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, confirmed by locals and spot guides, offering side-shore to side-on wind relative to the southwest-facing beach. The water surface varies: flat with southwest winds, more chop or small waves with southeast. Spacious navigation areas at low tide, but stay vigilant in crowded zones.
Ideal with winds from ESE to W, strength 12-25 kts for a clean water surface and side-shore conditions. Low tide to maximize beach space.
The water surface ranges from flat to chop depending on the wind and tide, with small waves possible on Mounts Bay. Sand bottom, ideal for gliding.
Currents are generally weak in the bay, but influenced by the significant tides of the Channel. Beware of variations near channels or at low tide.
Opt for sizes 9 to 11m² in light to medium wind like the local 15 kts, 7-9m² if gusty or wavy.
The prevailing wind comes from the SW to W, typical of the Atlantic region, with strengths around 15 kts on average at the spot (score 50/100). No specific local name, but thermal regimes in summer and winter depressions ensure consistency.
The climate in Cornwall is mild oceanic, with moderate temperatures year-round. Summers are pleasant around 15-20°C, winters cool at around 8-12°C. The best months for kitesurfing are variable, often autumn and spring for consistent wind.
Progressive depth with a sand bottom. You can stand far from the shore at low tide, perfect for beginners.
Temperatures around 10-12°C in winter/spring, 15-18°C in summer. A 5/3mm wetsuit is recommended year-round.
