Gökçeada

Kite Beach, in Aydıncık on the island of Gökçeada, is one of the most well-known spots in Turkey for kitesurfing. The beach is appreciated for its flat water in the morning, its on-site schools, and its very rider-oriented atmosphere.

When the meltemi is blowing well, there is plenty of opportunity for long sessions in freestyle and fast navigation. The spot is mainly interesting for riders who are already comfortable, as the wind is often strong and the space can become crowded quickly during the peak season.

Location

Detailed information

At Kite Beach / Aydıncık, the summer wind is often offshore to side-offshore depending on the exact orientation of the day, which explains the very clean water observed in the morning. According to several local guides and schools, the spot works particularly well with the meltemi, a regional wind from the NW to N sector that often strengthens in late morning before decreasing in the afternoon. Local sources also mention very marked flat conditions in the morning, then more accessible for beginners when the wind eases.

The navigation area is organized quite clearly between kitesurfers and windsurfers, with a sandy beach and an easy launch when the wind is not too strong. The spot is known for its freestyle and race sessions, as the water generally remains smooth in the area exposed to the offshore wind. However, as the wind can become strong, one must keep an eye on the drift offshore and be well organized with the safety boat present on site.

In practice, the spot is more comfortable when one already has a good level of control, especially in strong wind configurations. Local schools also report that the spot is lively in season, with significant attendance in summer. Depending on the wind direction, the water can remain very clean in the morning and then become more irregular when the thermal drops and the breeze becomes less stable.

Risks & Safety

  • The wind can be offshore, so the drift offshore is a real risk.
  • The spot can be very crowded in summer, especially in areas close to the schools.
  • The safety boat does not exempt one from staying vigilant, as gusts can be strong.
