Informations utiles
The main wind is side-on from the right (East to Northeast), sometimes cross-shore or onshore in high season, blowing regularly over a wide launch area on the sandy beach. The navigation area is a lagoon protected by the Buccoo reef, offering perfect flatwater, with little tide impact on the water that remains smooth year-round. The launch is directly from the narrow beach, easily accessible, and the downwind area allows for long sessions towards Coral Gardens or Nylon Pool.
For beginners, the shallow bottom (water up to the knees for hundreds of meters) is ideal for learning and waterstarts. Intermediates and advanced riders enjoy a vast space for tricks, with local thermals boosting the wind in the afternoon. Be cautious of a few coral heads near the shore, hence the need for booties. Centers like Radical Sports or Tobago Kitesurf Centre provide professional service with storage and rescue.
Ideal conditions are a side-on wind of 15-25 knots from East to Northeast, stable in the dry season for long sessions on flatwater.
The water state is flat to light chop thanks to the reef protection, ideal for freestyle and freeride. No shorebreak, and the Caribbean Sea waves are blocked, ensuring consistent conditions for all levels.
Currents are generally weak in the lagoon protected by the Buccoo reef, making navigation safe. Tides have a low impact, with a moderate range; check the schedules for trips to Nylon Pool. Near the reef passes, the current may slightly increase.
Choose kite sizes from 9 to 14m² depending on wind strength: 12-14m in light mid-season, 9-11m at peak season.
The wind regime relies on trade winds from East to Northeast, with an average strength of 15-25 knots from December to June, peaking in February-March. In mid-season (April-May), it drops to 12-15 knots, sufficient for larger kites. Local thermals enhance the wind in the afternoon over the lagoon.
The tropical climate of Tobago is warm and humid year-round, with air temperatures around 28-32°C during the day. The dry season from December to May offers the best stable weather, while the rainy season (June-November) brings short showers but remains navigable. The water is always warm, around 27-29°C, with no need for a wetsuit.
The depth is gradual and shallow in the lagoon, with a sandy bottom for hundreds of meters; you can stand for a long time, ideal for beginners.
The water remains warm year-round at 27-29°C, perfect for riding in boardshorts without neoprene, even in the dry season.
