Informations utiles
The dominant wind comes from the SW in summer season (May-September), blowing side-onshore relative to the lagoon, which offers an ultra flat water surface protected by a sandbar 100m wide and 1km long. The launch is easy on the large sandy beach or on the east side of the lagoon if staying in the village of Kappalady. The main navigation area is the flat lagoon, shallow up to the chest, with a butter-flat downwind spot from the sandbar for tricks and freestyle.
In case of strong wind, small ripples form elsewhere in the lagoon, but remain manageable. To head out to the ocean, just cross 300m of lagoon to reach a beach break of 2-5 ft and offshore reefs with small to medium waves, best from May to August. Tides do not influence the conditions, you can always navigate well. Downwinders to the Sethawadi lagoon to the north are possible, larger but gustier. The take-off area is spacious, with enough room for 15 riders max without interfering.
The ideal conditions are a SW 20-30 knots side-onshore wind, stable throughout the day in summer season. This offers a perfect butter-flat water surface for freestyle and quick learning.
The water surface is mainly flat and smooth in the lagoon, with a thigh to chest depth allowing for standing everywhere. Small rides or waves form in strong wind, and in the ocean, there are small to medium waves on the beach break and reefs.
The currents are weak in the lagoon, thanks to its natural protection. In the ocean, near the reefs, they can slightly intensify, but remain manageable for experienced riders. Tides do not have a significant impact on navigability.
For the typical wind of 20-30 knots, plan for sizes of 7 to 11m². The smaller ones for strong days, the larger ones in winter for lighter winds.
The wind regime is dominated by two monsoons: the southwest from May to September with 20-30 knots constant speeds throughout the day, and the northeast from December to March around 10-20 knots, lighter but reliable. The wind score is excellent at 73/100, with a current orientation of 258.9° (W-SW). All months are good, but summer offers the best for daily sessions.
The climate is hot tropical year-round, with temperatures around 28-32°C during the day. The summer season (May-September) corresponds to the Yala monsoon, which is drier and windier, while winter (December-March) brings the northeast monsoon with lighter winds. The best months for kiting are from May to October for strong winds, and December-March for calmer sessions.
The depth is gradual and shallow, from thigh to chest in the lagoon, with a sandy bottom. You can stand everywhere, ideal for tricks and beginners.
The water is warm year-round, around 27-30°C, generally without the need for a wetsuit. Slightly cooler in winter season.
