Kappalady

The Kappalady lagoon, located on the Kalpitiya peninsula on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka, is a spot favored by riders of all levels for its relaxed and authentic atmosphere. Surrounded by fishing villages, mangrove forests, and far from mass tourism, this lagoon offers a preserved natural setting where kitesurfing began in 2005 with the first events in Sri Lanka.

What makes Kappalady strong is its versatility: a flat and shallow lagoon ideal for beginners and freestylers, combined with reef break waves accessible just 100 meters from the shore. The lagoon itself is separated from the ocean by a 100-meter-wide sandbar and extends about 1 kilometer long, providing plenty of space to progress safely.

Conditions de navigation

Kappalady offers very stable side-onshore conditions, particularly during the southwest monsoon. The lagoon itself is extremely flat, with a depth ranging from thigh to chest height (about 0.6 to 1.5 meters), allowing you to stand anywhere and progress with confidence. There is a particularly smooth and deep trick spot downstream of the sandbar, where most riders prepare and launch.

Launching is easy on the large sandy beach 100 meters wide, with plenty of space for rigging and take-off. You can also launch from the east side of the lagoon, which is convenient if you are staying in the village of Kappalady. When the wind is strong, small ripples and waves form elsewhere in the lagoon, but the water surface remains overall very controlled. For advanced riders, downwinders are possible to the larger but gusty lagoon of Sethawadi to the north. In the ocean, small to medium waves form beyond the sandbar, with a reef break less than 100 meters from the shore offering clean waves of 2 to 5 feet.

Conditions do not depend on tides at Kappalady, meaning you can kite at any time of the day without worrying about depth or current variations related to tide cycles.

Vent ideal

W

The ideal conditions at Kappalady are between 15 and 30 knots, with a regular and reliable side-onshore wind. During the southwest monsoon (May to September), the wind blows extremely consistently, allowing for long and progressive sessions without interruption. A wind of 20 to 25 knots is perfect for most riders, providing enough power to progress without being too intense.

Even with lighter winds of 10 to 15 knots during the northeast monsoon, conditions remain excellent for kitesurfing thanks to the flatness of the lagoon and the absence of disruptive current. The regularity of the wind is one of Kappalady's greatest assets, allowing for rapid progression and mastery of techniques in stable conditions.

État de la mer

The water surface at Kappalady is exceptionally flat in the lagoon, with a smooth surface like butter, making it one of the flattest spots in Sri Lanka. This flatness is due to the sandbar that protects the lagoon from ocean swell. When the wind is strong, small ripples and waves may form, but the water surface remains very controlled and predictable.

In the ocean, beyond the sandbar, small to medium waves regularly form, particularly during the southwest monsoon. The reef break offers clean and well-formed waves, ideal for progressing in wave riding. The combination of the flat lagoon and accessible ocean waves makes Kappalady a versatile spot for all kitesurfing styles.

Courants marins

The current at Kappalady is generally weak, contributing to the safety of the spot for beginners. Tide conditions do not significantly affect kitesurfing conditions at Kappalady, unlike many other spots. This means you can plan your sessions at any time of the day without worrying about current or depth variations related to tide cycles.

Taille de kite recommandée

The recommended kite sizes at Kappalady vary according to the season and your weight. During the southwest monsoon with winds of 20 to 30 knots, a kite of 9 to 12 meters is ideal for most riders. For lighter riders or those who prefer a more direct feel, a 7 to 9 meters may suffice.

During the northeast monsoon with winds of 10 to 20 knots, a kite of 11 to 14 meters is recommended to maintain power and controllability. Beginners should start with a slightly larger kite for more maneuverability and stability. Having two or three kite sizes allows for adaptation to all seasonal conditions.

Météo & vent

The wind regime at Kappalady is dominated by two distinct monsoons. During the southwest monsoon (May to September), the wind blows extremely consistently and reliably, with average speeds of 20 to 30 knots, blowing day and night. This is the high season and the ideal time to progress quickly due to the consistency of conditions.

During the northeast monsoon (December to February), the wind is lighter and less consistent, varying between 10 to 20 knots, but remains quite suitable for kitesurfing. The wind blows in the opposite direction during this period, slightly altering the conditions but not making the spot less accessible. Between these two seasons, conditions remain good, which explains why Kappalady can be kited almost 8 months a year with reliable conditions.

Climat

The climate in Kappalady is tropical with two distinct monsoon seasons. The region enjoys kitesurfing conditions almost year-round, making it a very accessible destination. Temperatures remain warm and consistent, typical of the northwest coast of Sri Lanka, with particularly warm and welcoming water year-round, ideal for kitesurfing in a swimsuit or light wetsuit.

The southwest monsoon, from May to September, brings the most stable and reliable conditions, while the northeast monsoon, from December to February, offers lighter but equally pleasant conditions. The region remains relatively dry and sunny even during the monsoon seasons, allowing for regular kiting.

Profondeur

The depth at Kappalady is progressive and shallow, making it an ideal spot for beginners. In the lagoon, the depth ranges from thigh to chest height, about 0.6 to 1.5 meters, allowing you to stand anywhere and progress with confidence. There is a particularly deep and smooth trick spot downstream of the sandbar, where the depth reaches about 1.5 to 2 meters, ideal for freestyle maneuvers.

The bottom is made of sand, which is very safe and comfortable for falls. In the ocean, beyond the sandbar, the depth gradually increases, allowing safe access to the reef break waves. This combination of progressive depth and sandy bottom makes Kappalady extremely safe for all levels.

Température de l’eau

The water at Kappalady is warm year-round, which is one of the great advantages of the spot. During the southwest monsoon (May to September), the water temperature is generally around 28 to 30°C, very pleasant for kitesurfing in a swimsuit or light wetsuit.

During the northeast monsoon (December to February), the water remains warm with temperatures around 26 to 28°C, still very comfortable for kitesurfing without thermal protection. This warm water year-round makes Kappalady accessible and enjoyable even during winter months, unlike many other global spots.
