The Kalpitiya lagoon, located in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, is an iconic spot bordered by a narrow channel and the Indian Ocean. Protected by a sandbar, it offers a vast and shallow water area, perfect for long sessions.
This place attracts riders from all over the world thanks to its two distinct wind seasons and its flat as a mirror water. There are many kite schools, and the atmosphere remains relaxed even during peak season.
Just a stone's throw from the kite camps, the lagoon stretches over 2 km long and 800 m wide, with easy access from the coastal road.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The Kalpitiya lagoon is oriented north-south, with a main wind side-on or cross-on from the left in summer season (southwest) and side-shore north in winter. The water surface remains flat regardless of the tide, thanks to the protection of the sandbar that blocks the ocean waves.
The main navigation area extends over 2 km long and 800 m wide, with direct water access from the sandy beach along the channel. Take-off occurs on this wide sand strip, where there is room for 30 kites without congestion. In case of strong winds, you can head downwind to other lagoons for kite safaris.
Local feature: the water is shallow up to waist height everywhere, ideal for learning or freestyling. On the ocean side, accessible via the channel, it is more choppy or wavy in summer, but the lagoon remains the star for its consistency 24/7 in peak season.
The ideal conditions are a 15-25 knots side-on wind from the southwest in summer or north in winter, for a perfectly flat water surface and long sessions without fatigue.
The water in the lagoon is flat and shallow, with only a slight chop during very strong winds. Dark and muddy water quality in some areas, but always smooth for freestyling or freeriding.
The currents are weak in the lagoon due to its confinement, but beware of the channel separating the lagoon from the ocean where they can accelerate with the tide. Minimal tide influence on the spot, independent of water height.
In summer season, opt for sizes around 9 m² on average, up to 7 m² in strong winds. In winter, go up to 12 m² for lighter afternoon winds.
In summer season (May-September), the southwest wind blows 15-30 knots continuously, often 24/7, with an average of 18-25 knots. It is the southwest monsoon that channels the wind into the lagoon for stable power.
In winter (December-March), the north or northwest wind rises in the afternoon to 12-20 knots, perfect for foiling or light riding until sunset. Typical wind score around 59/100 according to forecasts.
The tropical climate of Kalpitiya offers consistent temperatures around 25-28°C year-round, with no need for a wetsuit. Two monsoon seasons: summer (May-September) is hot and windy, while winter (December-March) is milder with afternoon winds.
The best months cover almost the entire year, peaking in May-September for strong winds and December-February for stable conditions.
The depth is gradual and shallow, up to waist height (1-1.5 m) throughout the lagoon, with a sandy-muddy bottom. You can stand everywhere, ideal for beginners.
The water temperature hovers around 25-28°C year-round, comfortable without a wetsuit. Slightly warmer in summer around 28°C.
