Valdevaqueros

The Duna de Valdevaqueros is a legendary beach in Tarifa, Andalusia, 8 km from the village. It stretches over 2 km with the neighboring beaches of Valdevaqueros and Las Dunas, forming a natural spoon protected by Punta Paloma. It is a popular spot for kitesurfers due to its consistent wind and facilities like the chiringuitos Tangana or Tumbao.

The beach features fine sand mixed with small stones in places, with a sandy seabed. The spot is accessible year-round, with designated kite zones from June 15 to September 15. Schools like Ion Club offer lessons for all levels.

Surrounded by impressive dunes, the beach attracts locals and pros for its relaxed atmosphere and freeride or freestyle sessions.

Location

Detailed information

Valdevaqueros beach is oriented west, ideal for Poniente (west wind, 40% of the days) in side-on-shore, with a water surface of light chop under 1 m and waves of 1.5 to 2 m, sometimes 3-4 m in storms. The Levante (east-northeast wind, 50% of the days) is side-off, offering a flat water surface perfect for freestyle and freeride, with swell of 1-2 m and beach break. Easy launch on sand, wide take-off area in the center, navigation south for waves or north near Punta Paloma for more safety.

In south wind (5%, onshore), the water surface is choppy and difficult due to cross waves. North wind (5%, side-shore) gives a calm sea, ideal with medium swell. The thermal wind strengthens in the afternoon. Separate swimming areas in summer, rescue boats present. Avoid the northwest edge if the wind is too NW due to the dune relief causing disturbances.

  • The spot is very crowded in summer, respect the designated areas.

  • Drift risk is reduced by Punta Paloma, but watch out for strong winds.
