Rio Jara is a spot located north of Tarifa, between La Jaima and Los Lances Norte, near the campsite of the same name. It is accessed by parking at La Jaima and then walking for about ten minutes. It is a popular place for its space and constant wind, especially during the main season.
The beach is wide and sandy, with a beautiful view of the mountains. There is a beach bar and amenities at the campsite, and a calm atmosphere due to the somewhat technical access.
The spot alternates between ocean and lagoon depending on the tide, but the lagoon is prohibited for kiting all year round to protect the wildlife.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The wind Poniente (west) blows side-on from the sea, perfect for navigation with a water state in chop with small waves, and up to 1.5-2 m with swell. For the Levante (east), it is side-offshore, ideal for waves on the ocean side, but without rescue service so caution is mandatory. The launch area is on a large sandy beach, spacious take-off zone without major obstacles.
The navigation area is on the ocean side, absolutely avoid the lagoon and the mouth of the river. At high tide, a lagoon forms behind the beach but it is prohibited for kiting, with wooden poles planted to protect it. In summer (June 15 - September 15), the spot is often no-go or zoned for bathers, prefer the marked areas at Los Lances Norte. Pedestrian access from the parking lot, few people due to the walk.
High tide is recommended for more space and safety. The spot is used as a teaching area by some schools, follow local rules and buy a rescue card for Levante.
The ideal conditions are with Poniente side-on at 20-30 knots for fun chop and moderate waves. Strong Levante for experienced waves, but only if swell is present.
The water state varies in chop, with small to medium waves on the ocean. With swell in winter, the waves become rideable for experts. No pure flat except potentially in the prohibited lagoon.
The currents are strong and dangerous at the mouth of the Rio Jara, to be avoided at all costs. The tides influence the formation of the lagoon at high tide, but the current remains marked near the channel connecting the sea and river.
Opt for sizes from 9 to 11 m² in medium Poniente, go down to 7-9 m² for strong Levante. Adjust according to your weight and level, plan for a wide range as the wind is powerful.
The wind regime is dominated by the Poniente, a constant and strong west wind, and the Levante, a hot and powerful east wind. The Poniente offers 40% of usable days, side-on from the sea. The Levante is side-offshore at this spot, with gusts up to 40 knots for experts.
The Andalusian climate is mild all year round, with spring temperatures around 15-20°C and summer temperatures up to 30°C. In winter, it is 10-15°C, perfect for riding without too much wetsuit. The best months cover the entire year thanks to the constant Poniente and Levante winds.
The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand for a long time from the shore on this large beach.
Water temperatures range from 15°C in winter to 22-25°C in summer. A 3/2 wetsuit is sufficient off-season, shorty or lycra in mid-summer.
