Tarifa

Los Lances North is the main spot in Tarifa, located in Andalusia in southern Spain. This vast beach of fine white sand stretches for about 7 kilometers along the Atlantic coast, offering an impressive setting between golden dunes and the ocean horizon. It is one of the few places in the region open to kitesurfing year-round, including during the summer months.

The spot is divided into several well-organized zones, with kite schools, bars, and complete facilities dedicated to sliding sports. The northern zone concentrates the majority of services and riders, while the southern zone, near the Jara River, attracts more tourists in summer. Los Lances North is appreciated for its accessibility for all levels and its cosmopolitan atmosphere typical of Tarifa.

The spot benefits from a strategic location at the Strait of Gibraltar, which creates exceptional and consistent wind conditions. It is a must-visit for riders seeking reliable and varied conditions.

Location

Detailed information

Los Lances North works with both main wind regimes of Tarifa. The Poniente (west-southwest) blows from the Atlantic and creates side-onshore to onshore conditions on the spot, generating regular waves and a dynamically choppy water surface. The Levante (east-southeast) is accelerated by the venturi effect of the Strait of Gibraltar and blows side-offshore to offshore, creating gustier conditions and a more agitated water surface.

The beach is very wide with a secure and clear launching area, particularly in the north where the schools are concentrated. The water entry is easy on the fine sand. In high season, rescue boats are present for riders. The northern zone offers the best conditions for starting and progressing, while the southern zone, between the football field and the Jara River, can be more crowded in summer but remains accessible.

The spot works well at both low and high tide, with a water surface that remains navigable year-round. Be cautious of the occasional presence of algae, particularly in the southern zone. The Jara River channel can create localized currents to watch out for.
