The Gran Playa benefits from a favorable orientation for kitesurfing. The dominant wind comes from the southeast, south, and southwest, creating very pleasant side-shore to side-on conditions. The water surface is flat and slightly choppy, ideal for riders of all levels. Conditions do not depend on tides at this spot, simplifying session planning.
Launching is done directly from the fine sandy beach. The spot features a gradual depth that allows for safe navigation. Thermal winds are particularly important: they usually start after 1 PM when the sun has heated the land and last until around 8 PM. These thermal winds are stable from late February to early November. In winter, a strong and gusty wind called Poniente blows from the north, more suitable for experienced riders. The best wind is the SW (Lebeche), which is strong and consistent. The east and northeast winds also work well, accelerating against the hills but can be gusty.
The navigation area is clear and well-defined. Afternoons are generally busier as this is when the sea breeze picks up. The spot is very popular on good days, so it's better to arrive early or late in the afternoon for more space.
Ideal conditions occur with a southwest (Lebeche) wind, which is strong and consistent. The east and northeast winds also work very well. Thermal winds of 12 to 30 knots in summer provide excellent sessions. In winter, northwest winds of 20 to 30 knots are suitable for advanced riders. Afternoons are generally preferable as the sea breeze establishes after 1 PM and remains stable until around 8 PM. The overall best periods are spring, summer, and autumn.
The Gran Playa offers a flat and slightly choppy water surface, a characteristic that makes it an ideal spot for all levels. The water is generally calm with few waves, except during exceptional weather conditions. This absence of swell allows focusing on technique and tricks without having to manage a choppy sea. On calm days, even without significant wind, one can enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding to explore the bay.
The currents in Santa Pola are generally weak, making the spot safe and accessible. Conditions do not depend on tides, simplifying navigation. However, one must remain vigilant near coastal areas and respect established navigation zones.
The recommended kite sizes depend on seasonal conditions. In summer, with winds of 8 to 15 knots, a kite of 12 to 14 m² is suitable for beginners. With thermal winds of 12 to 30 knots, a kite of 9 to 12 m² works well. In winter, with winds of 20 to 30 knots, a kite of 7 to 9 m² is necessary for experienced riders. For the average and regular conditions of the spot, a kite of 10 to 12 m² is a good versatile choice.

The depth at Gran Playa is gradual with a fine sand bottom. One can stand up to about 50 meters from the shore, providing a large safe navigation area. This gradual depth is ideal for beginners who can stay close to the shore, while more experienced riders can venture further out.
