The Playa de Los Charcos, located in Costa Teguise on Lanzarote, is a popular spot among locals for its proximity to the famous Cucharas beach. It is a small white sand beach bordered by two volcanic stone jetties, with little tourism and an authentic atmosphere.
It mainly attracts experienced kitesurfers due to its consistent wind and open space, away from the crowds. Windsurfing and wingfoiling can also be seen here, in a volcanic setting typical of the Canaries.
Less crowded than neighboring spots, it offers free navigation without too much supervision, ideal for quiet sessions year-round.
The beach is oriented northeast, making it a perfect spot for northeast to east winds in side-on or side-shore, with a regular power that rises quickly. The water surface is agitated by the tide, especially at high tide where a good wave forms between the two jetties, ideal for jumping or riding short waves.
Launching is done directly from the fine sand, easy even with kite gear, but be careful at low tide where the water is very shallow near the shore, requiring a long walk to launch. The navigation area extends offshore from the jetties, with enough space to avoid crowding, unlike the neighboring Las Cucharas.
Launching is simple on the sparsely populated beach, with schools nearby for gear or rescue if needed. In south-west offshore wind, it pushes you out, so be cautious. Conditions are consistent year-round, with a wind score of 94/100 and good months, but optimal from May to August.
Ideal conditions are with northeast wind 20-30 knots side-on, for a choppy but rideable water surface. Avoid the south offshore wind that pushes you out.
The water surface is choppy with short waves between the jetties, perfect for freestyle or jumps. At low tide, it is choppy and shallow near the shore, while at high tide, it opens up with a rideable wave.
No big swell except during storms, but there is always movement due to the strong wind.
Currents are generally weak in the bay but can strengthen offshore near the jetties. Tides are significant, with a low tide exposing a lot of bottom and reducing the navigable area.
High tide offers more water and a safer plan for kiting.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in medium wind, 7 to 9 m² when it picks up, and up to 13-15 m² on the rare light days.
The wind regime is dominated by the northeast trade wind, consistent and strong, with speeds around 20-30 knots in peak season. It blows regularly throughout the year, more reliably from May to September.
Days of light wind are rare, and the Los Charcos area is very exposed, creating powerful gusts due to the volcanic topography.
Lanzarote enjoys a dry subtropical climate year-round, with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C on average. Mild winters around 18-22°C and hot summers at 25-30°C allow for kiting in lycra or shorty.
Little rain, especially in summer, and almost permanent sunshine make sessions enjoyable without interruption.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, but very shallow at low tide where you can stand for long distances. Offshore, it drops quickly after the jetties.
The water remains warm year-round between 18°C in winter and 22-24°C in summer. A 3/2 shorty is sufficient off-season.
