Misty Cliffs
South Africa · Cap occidental
Misty Cliffs, located in Scarborough on the Cape Peninsula, is a spot known for its waves and big air with extreme conditions and a wild setting. It is one of the most gnarly and dangerous spots in the area, with rocky cliffs overlooking a small bay exposed to the Atlantic Ocean. The launch area is on Whitsands beach, a mix of sand and shells.
This spot is not for everyone. The conditions are very powerful: big swells, storm winds, cold water, and strong currents. If you don't know what you're doing, you can quickly find yourself in serious trouble. But for those who master it, it's a magical place with nice kickers and memorable wave rides inside the bay.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
Misty Cliffs is a spot very exposed to the Atlantic Ocean with little natural protection. The wind is extremely powerful, blowing regularly between 30 and 55 knots. Northwest winds are perfect for clean and well-formed wave rides, while southeast winds are better suited for big air sessions. If the wind comes too much from the east, it becomes very unstable and chaotic.
The launch area is on Whitsands beach, which offers some sand to launch your kite. However, you must be aware that Misty Cliffs itself is located slightly upwind of Whitsands, meaning you will need to navigate to access it. The navigation area is tricky: rocks are exposed on both sides of the bay, and waves can reach 3 meters or more. The current can pull you out to sea if you lose control of your kite. It is a very powerful reef break with persistent swell but light wind inside the bay, making conditions unpredictable.
