The Albufeira lagoon, located in the Setúbal district about 30-40 minutes south of Lisbon, is one of the most beautiful lagoons in Portugal for kitesurfing. Separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandbar about fifty meters wide, it offers an exceptional natural setting where the flat, protected water contrasts with the small waves of the open ocean. It is a spot appreciated by riders of all levels for its accessibility and friendly atmosphere.
The lagoon functions like a true kitesurfing aquarium, where one can observe all phases of progression, from beginners to advanced riders. The resident school Meira Pro Center is located here and offers rental kites as well as courses for all levels. The spot is less crowded than other lagoons closer to Lisbon, making it an ideal place to progress without pressure.

The Albufeira lagoon offers side-onshore conditions with a dominant northwest wind that creates ideal kitesurfing conditions. The water surface is extremely flat inside the lagoon, making it a perfect playground for practicing maneuvers like relaunching, upwind riding, and jumps.
Conditions vary significantly depending on the tide. At low tide, the lagoon becomes very shallow and may even be partially dried up in some areas, presenting some risks. However, the eastern part of the lagoon, near the Meira Pro Center school, maintains sufficient depth for navigation. At high tide, the lagoon fills completely and becomes a paradise for all levels, with chest-deep water.
The launch and landing area is very spacious with a normal sandy bottom. Riders can also access the open ocean by crossing the sandbar to find small waves of about 1 meter. During the summer season (high beach season), the lagoon is prohibited for water sports except in the northern area, so check local restrictions before coming.
Ideal conditions are between 15 and 25 knots with a northwest wind creating perfect side-onshore conditions. These conditions are regularly encountered from May to October, a period when the spot offers the best sessions. The wind is consistent and predictable, allowing for good session planning.
The water surface of the lagoon is extremely flat and offers ideal conditions for learning and progression. At low tide, the water can be very shallow, even partially dried up in some areas. At high tide, the lagoon fills completely and offers chest-deep water, creating optimal conditions. The open ocean, on the other side of the sandbar, presents small waves of about 1 meter for those looking for a bit more sensation.
The current at Lagoa de Albufeira is generally weak, which contributes to the safety of the spot for beginners. However, care should be taken near the channel that separates the lagoon from the ocean, where the current can be stronger. Tide conditions do not directly affect kitesurfing, but they strongly influence the depth and accessibility of the lagoon.
For typical conditions of 15 to 25 knots, the recommended kite sizes range between 9 and 13 meters depending on your weight and level. Lighter riders or beginners will prefer kites of 11 to 13 meters, while heavier or experienced riders can use 9 to 11 meters. Having multiple sizes available allows for adaptation to wind variations throughout the day.
The dominant wind regime at Lagoa de Albufeira is characterized by thermal winds from the north to northwest that blow regularly and predictably. The wind strength generally ranges between 15 and 25 knots, which is perfect for freestyle and freeride. The wind is consistent throughout the year, with the best conditions from May to October. Between June and August, the wind reaches its maximum strength, although summer heat can sometimes reduce actual intensity compared to forecasts.
The climate of the Sesimbra region is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers. Temperatures are pleasant year-round, making the spot accessible in all seasons. During the summer months, the heat can be intense, which sometimes reduces wind intensity compared to weather forecasts.
The depth of the lagoon varies significantly depending on the tide. At low tide, the water can be very shallow, from 0.5 to 1 meter in most areas, even dried up in some places. At high tide, the depth reaches about 1.5 to 2 meters (chest-deep). The bottom is entirely sandy, which offers excellent safety for beginners. The area of the lagoon near Meira Pro Center maintains sufficient depth even at low tide.
The water of the Albufeira lagoon is relatively temperate year-round due to the influence of the Atlantic. In summer, the water reaches pleasant temperatures around 20-22°C, allowing for riding in shorts and lycra. In winter, temperatures drop to around 12-14°C, requiring a light wetsuit or shorty depending on your sensitivity to cold.
