Masirah

Mursays, on the island of Masirah in the Ash Sharqiyah South governorate, is a spot known for its consistent wind and relatively clean water. The atmosphere is simple and efficient, with direct access to the sea and often less crowded than the more exposed spots on the island.

The spot mainly attracts riders looking for a good compromise between solid wind and comfortable navigation. Depending on the conditions, the water can range from slightly choppy flat to more marked terrain, with a launch area that requires attention to the starting zone.

It’s an interesting spot to enjoy the Masirah coast without falling into the most crowded areas. The conditions are generally suitable for riders who are already comfortable with kite control and navigation management on a sometimes technical site.

At Mursays, the wind most often arrives with a side to side-on component, allowing for navigation with a good safety margin while maintaining a good upwind angle. The spot is known to work over a large part of the beautiful season, with a favorable period mainly extending from May to September, and interesting sessions also in January.

The water surface varies depending on the area used and the tide. One can find relatively flat sections thanks to local shelter and coastal configuration, but also some chop when the wind strengthens or when the sea comes in more. At low tide, some areas become more sensitive, with less water available near the shore and navigation shifting more offshore or to the better-fed sections.

The launch is generally done on a sandy area, but one must remain vigilant as reading the spot is not as simple as on a large, completely open lagoon. The launch area may be adequate in size, but it is important to check the actual space before rigging, especially if there are many people, small obstacles, or fishing boats nearby. On this type of spot in Masirah, the best choice often consists of launching cleanly, keeping a margin downwind, and observing the state of the water before venturing far from the shore.

The best sessions occur with a side to side-on wind, well established and consistent, especially during the Khareef period. The spot shows its best potential when the wind is strong enough to clean the surface without making navigation too physical.

The most interesting months are January, April, May, June, July, August, and September, with a peak of reliability from June to September. It is during this window that Mursays most often offers the most consistent conditions.

État de la mer

The water at Mursays is most often a mix of flat and small chop, with variations depending on wind strength and sea state. When the swell remains limited, one enjoys a fairly clean water surface for freeriding or working on simple tricks. When the wind picks up, the surface becomes livelier and requires more anticipation.

The spot is not a large, completely smooth lagoon, but it can offer very good sections for clean navigation if one chooses the right tide window. Intermediate to advanced riders will find it an interesting terrain, especially when the wind is well established and the water remains readable.

Courants marins

Currents are generally moderate, but they can become more pronounced depending on the tide and local shore configuration. One must stay alert to areas where the water accelerates near certain passages, especially if moving away from the launch area or if the wind starts pushing offshore.

The tide plays a real role in the accessibility of the spot. At low tide, some areas become less comfortable, with less water and sometimes a more technical launch. At high tide, the spot is generally easier to navigate, with more room for waterstarts and initial runs.

Taille de kite recommandée

At Mursays, one should plan for kite sizes that are more oriented towards strong wind. The most useful sizes are often 7, 8, and 9 m², with a 10 m² for more moderate days and a 6 m² if the Khareef is very strong.

For an average build, a quiver centered on 7-9 m² already covers a large part of the good sessions. Heavier riders may keep a 10 or 11 m² for calmer days, but the spot makes the most sense when the wind starts to come in well.

Météo & vent

The wind regime is marked by the Khareef, the southwest wind that becomes particularly strong between June and September. This is the heart of the season on Masirah, with days when the wind can seriously pick up and offer powerful sessions, sometimes at the limit of what can be navigated with large kites.

Outside the peak of the Khareef, the spot remains interesting for several months of the year with often exploitable wind, especially from May to September and sometimes in January. At Mursays, one mainly seeks a consistent wind, fairly clean, with good intensity to exploit the spot's potential without being underpowered.

Climat

The climate of Masirah is hot and dry for much of the year, with typical conditions of eastern Oman. Temperatures are mild to hot in winter and become very high from spring onwards, then quite hot in summer. The best window for riding often corresponds to the months when the wind is most reliable, but one must also deal with heat that can rise quickly in the middle of the day.

In practice, the months of January and April remain more comfortable for long sessions, while May, June, July, August, and September require good hydration management and sun protection. The air often remains dry, and the thermal sensation depends greatly on the wind intensity and marine humidity.

Profondeur

The bottom is mainly sandy, with some more rocky areas to watch near the shore. Depth can vary depending on the tide and the specific area used, with sections where one can stand quite far out and others where the bottom drops off more quickly.

The spot is therefore quite reassuring regarding the bottom, but it is not completely uniform. One must keep an eye on the depth at launch, especially when the tide is low or when moving away from the most frequented areas that are better known by locals.

Température de l’eau

The water temperature generally remains pleasant for much of the year on Masirah. In winter, it can be cooler, but it often remains navigable in a light suit. In spring and summer, the water becomes warmer and often allows for riding with little protection.

From January to April, a light suit may be useful depending on individual sensitivity. From May to September, the water is most often warm enough for comfortable navigation, even if the air heat can make the session more demanding.
