Volendam

Edam IJsselmeer, on the shores of Markermeer near Volendam, is a well-known inland spot for east wind sessions. It is a favorite spot for local riders when other beaches in the area become difficult to exploit with this orientation.

The spot remains quite simple in its atmosphere, with a compact launch area and often high traffic when the wind is good. It requires a minimum level of skill, especially due to the limited space for takeoff and the obstacles present on the edges.

Location

Detailed information

The spot mainly works with a side-shore to side-on wind depending on the exact orientation, and it is clearly oriented towards east to northeast flows. Sources agree that the best directions range from N, NE, ENE, E, ESE to SE, with a real advantage for east winds. The water surface is typically a mix of chop and small short waves when the wind rises, which remains quite classic on Markermeer and the Edam area.

The navigation area is rather simple but restricted. There is a narrow launch strip, with little space to prepare the kite, and one must share the space with other users depending on the times. Several sources also report rocks or boulders on the edges, as well as limited shore space, making the spot less comfortable for beginners. For takeoff and landing, one must remain clean, keep equipment compact, and avoid cluttering the area, as the spot can be very crowded during good orientations.

The terrain is relatively flat at the water, but navigation requires attention near the shore and during takeoffs. Access is easy by car, with generally simple parking depending on the areas, but one must respect access and pathways on the dike. In summary, it is a practical spot for an east wind session, but not the most comfortable for learning without supervision.
