The beach of Grand Gaube, located on the north coast of Mauritius in Rivière du Rempart, is a quiet spot favored by riders for its vast lagoon and easy public access. Just 200 meters from the royal road, it offers a peaceful setting with few people, ideal for a relaxed session away from the crowds.
Close to Grand Gaube and near Port Louis, it is an authentic place where local fishermen anchor their boats near the shore. Navigation takes place in a lagoon similar to that of Anse la Raie, but a bit more choppy due to the openings in the reef.
The crystal clear waters and sandy bottom make it a pleasant place, although caution is advised with the reef traps.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The main wind comes from the SE, making conditions side-onshore or sideshore perfect for the north-facing beach. In this lagoon, you mainly ride in freeride, freestyle and sometimes wave when the swell comes through. The launch requires navigating around anchored fishing boats in the first few meters, then it’s open to the reef with a bit of tide.
The launch area is on the public beach, easily accessible in less than 5 minutes. Favor upwind areas to find clear and flat water, away from coral heads. The water conditions are flat to choppy depending on the tide, choppier than at Anse la Raie due to wider openings in the reef. The passes and channels can pull you out to sea, so increased vigilance is required.
No strong tide dependency indicated by some, but high tide or rising/falling tide recommended to avoid too flat areas. Daily rescue boats on site, and few surfers even on weekends.
Ideal conditions with winds SE to ESE at 16-25 knots, side-onshore, at high tide for optimal water conditions and no traps.
Water conditions are flat to choppy, with crystal clear waters and a sandy bottom. It is choppier than the neighboring lagoons due to the breaches in the reef, suitable for freeride and freestyle.
The current is generally weak or none in the lagoon, but it strengthens significantly in the passes and channels of the reef, potentially pulling you out to sea without warning. Stay vigilant near the openings.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² on average for winds of 16-25 knots, smaller in gusts or larger in light sessions.
The SE trade winds dominate, with an average strength of 16-25 knots in the high season. Best directions: NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, venturi trade winds. Little wind in summer, peak from June to October.
The climate in Grand Gaube is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round around 25-30°C. The dry season from May to November offers the best conditions, while the austral summer (December to April) is calmer and wetter with less wind.
Depth is progressive and shallow with a sandy bottom, you can stand for a long time but watch out for shallow coral patches.
Water temperatures are warm year-round between 24-28°C, generally no need for a wetsuit.
