Cargados Carajos Shoals

Chaloupe Island, in the Saint Brandon archipelago in Mauritius, is an isolated spot highly appreciated by riders who enjoy kiting away from the crowd. The atmosphere is raw and marine, with large stretches of sand, an uncrowded lagoon, and conditions that can change quickly depending on the tide and the state of the reef.

This spot is especially favored by kitesurfers comfortable with lagoon environments and shallow areas. There is often a mix of flat, chop, and, depending on the banks and passes, some waves or small, more nervous sections. The location remains very preserved, with limited access and a true sense of isolation.

Detailed information

At Chaloupe Island, the SE wind most often arrives cross-shore or slightly cross-back relative to the navigation area, which provides generally exploitable conditions for kitesurfing. The area works well when the flow is steady, as the spot is exposed offshore and not well protected by the coast. You can navigate on a fairly varied water surface, with flat areas in the sheltered parts of the lagoon and chop as soon as the wind accelerates or the sea comes in more.

Launching takes place in sandy and flat areas, but the space remains small to medium depending on the exact spot where you land. Therefore, it is important to keep some margin during takeoff and landing, especially with larger equipment or multiple riders in the same area. The spot works well for long crossings in the lagoon and for playing between the sandbanks, but one must always keep an eye on depth variations and the limits of the reef.

Depending on the tide, the water can become very flat on the shallows, then take on more texture as the sea rises. Navigation is pleasant in the clear sandy areas and on the more open sectors, but one must remain attentive to the lagoon edges, shallow passages, and any reef areas. It is a spot that requires a simple reading of the water surface, with good space management and a clean takeoff.

Risks & Safety

  • The reef and shallow areas can be dangerous at low tide.
  • The current can strengthen near the passes and lagoon edges.
