Golden Bay is a golden sandy beach located on the northwest coast of Malta, near Ghajn Tuffieha and Gnejna Bay. It offers crystal clear shallow waters that gradually deepen, surrounded by natural dunes and steep cliffs with a 17th-century watchtower.
It is a popular spot for local kiters in winter due to its regular westerly wind and moderate waves. The atmosphere is lively with experienced riders, especially when conditions are optimal.
In summer, kitesurfing is prohibited on the beach due to swimming zones, but it remains a beautiful place for spectacular sunsets over the Mediterranean.

Golden Bay is oriented westerly/northwesterly, ideal for a side-on to side-off wind coming from the W or NW. Launching is done directly from the fine sandy beach, with a wide take-off area but to be monitored due to bathers off-season. The navigation area extends offshore where waves can rise up to 1m+ with onshore wind, perfect for boosted jumps combining waves and kite power.
The water surface is choppy to wavy depending on wind strength, with foamy waves near the shore in strong conditions. Prefer the western end of the beach to avoid crowds and obstacles. A webcam is available to check conditions live. In winter, the spot is open from October to May, but the wind is unpredictable and can go from nothing to very strong.
Be cautious of Mediterranean weather patterns: the SW wind is rare and seasonal in winter, but the dominant W works well here. For advanced riders, windy days offer fun with powerful waves, while intermediates stay close to the shore.
Ideal conditions are a stable W at 15-25 kts, side-on, for a smooth to moderately wavy water surface. Avoid overly strong days for intermediates.
The water surface varies from flat in offshore wind to choppy with waves up to 1m+ in onshore conditions. Near the shore, small breaking waves facilitate learning or jibes, while further out it is more powerful for tricks.
Currents are present with underwater rips to watch out for, especially in strong winds and waves. Tides are low in the Mediterranean, with no major impact on navigation, but check the schedules for swimming areas.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² in typical winter conditions, smaller like 7-9m² in strong wind, and 11-14m² when it's light.
The wind regime at Golden Bay relies on frequent westerly/northwesterly trade winds in winter, which can reach high strengths with gusts. There is no specific local name, but the W wind is the most reliable for this spot, often accompanied by clouds and rain in the cold season. The SW occasionally blows in winter for surf-kite sessions.
Malta enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with cool and humid winters suitable for kitesurfing from October to May. Daytime temperatures range from 15-20°C in winter and rise to 25-30°C in spring/autumn. Summers are hot and dry, but kitesurfing is prohibited on the beaches.
The depth is gradual with a sandy yellow-orange bottom. You can stand for a good distance from the shore before it deepens into the deep blue.
The water is cool in winter at 15-18°C, requiring a full wetsuit. In spring/autumn, it rises to 19-22°C, a shorty may suffice at times.
