Nyali Beach, located just north of Mombasa airport, is an easily accessible kitesurfing spot and ideal for establishing a base during your stay in Kenya. The beach offers a wide stretch of white sand with a relaxed atmosphere, kite schools, and a good local vibe.

The spot is characterized by versatile conditions: at low tide, the lagoon offers flat water perfect for progression, while at high tide, the water becomes choppy with waves on the reef that protects the lagoon. It is a favored spot for beginners and intermediate riders looking for a welcoming and progressive environment.

Location

Detailed information

Nyali Beach offers very variable conditions depending on the tide. At low tide, the lagoon becomes flat and ideal for beginners and freestyle, with limited but sufficient depth for progression. At high tide, the water becomes more agitated and choppy, the beach significantly narrows, and the waves from the outer reef become more accessible for experienced riders.

The wind is generally side-shore to side-on, which facilitates take-offs and landings on the wide sandy beach. Ideal wind directions include NE, E, SE, and S, especially during monsoon seasons. Launching is easy from the wide beach, but be cautious of the reduced space at high tide. Currents can be pronounced near channels and reef passages, requiring some vigilance.

Risks & Safety

  • Tide variations are significant and directly affect lagoon accessibility and depth: check the schedules before your session.

  • The current can be strong near channels and reef passages: stay vigilant and do not venture beyond your capabilities.

  • Fishing boats and traditional sailing vessels (dhows) circulate regularly: maintain good visibility and respect local navigation zones.

  • Rescue resources are limited: self-sufficiency is essential, and it is recommended to ride with a partner.
