Bosa

Bosa Marina, in Bosa, Sardinia, is a beach appreciated by riders for its easy access and pleasant setting. The spot works well with north-west winds and offers a varied playground depending on the area where one is kitesurfing.

There is a mix of flat, chop, and sometimes small waves, with a more technical atmosphere than it seems. It is not the most comfortable spot for beginners, especially due to the rapid depth and areas with rocks.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

At Bosa Marina, the water surface changes quickly depending on where one is in the bay. Near the beach and behind the pier, one can find calmer areas with flatter water, while further out the sea quickly becomes choppy with more present waves. According to spot feedback, the water becomes deep very quickly, often after only 5 to 10 meters from the shore, which requires anticipating the launch and getting in the water.

The most interesting wind generally comes from NW, with conditions suitable for side-on to side-shore navigation depending on the exact orientation of the day. The spot is not ideal for launching from the water, as the depth increases too quickly and launching is rather done from the beach, in a clear but sometimes busy area in summer. One must also deal with the presence of sailboats in the bay and with locally reported rocky areas.

For riders who already know their gear, it is an interesting spot to alternate between navigation in the bay and more engaged sessions further out. However, beginners should be cautious, as the beach is small, summer traffic increases, and conditions require keeping a margin for launching, returning, and managing drift.

S

The best sessions occur with a Maestrale from W to S, well-established and consistent. It is in this sector that the spot shows the most coherence, with enough pressure to kitesurf cleanly in the bay and enjoy the water surface without too much disturbance from the wind near the shore.

With wind around 20 to 25 knots, Bosa Marina becomes particularly interesting for intermediate and advanced riders. The spot can also handle stronger days, but it is preferable to have experience to manage the launch, navigation in the bay, and return to the shore.

Sea state

The water surface at Bosa Marina is generally described as a mix of flat, chop, and small to medium waves depending on the area. In the bay, one can find a cleaner surface near the shore or behind the pier, then a more pronounced chop as one moves outward.

When the wind and sea pick up, the waves become more present and can reach about 2 meters in the bay, with more organization offshore. Thus, it is a spot that can offer multiple faces in the same session, with flatter sections to work on stance and more choppy areas to send jumps or play in the swell.

Sea currents

Tides do not play a significant role here, and the spot is generally considered not tide-dependent. However, the depth increases very quickly near the shore, which influences the launch more than the tide level itself.

The current is not presented as a major element of the spot, but one must remain attentive in the bay, especially near busier navigation areas and close to boats. Returning to the shore must be anticipated, as the combination of rapid depth and swell can make some areas less comfortable than they appear.

Recommended kite size

In typical conditions, the most consistent sizes often range from 7 to 10 m², with a smaller kite on strong days and a kite around 9 or 10 m² when the wind is more stable but less powerful. With the provided wind value, an 8 m² or 9 m² seems to be the most logical choice for many sizes.

Lighter riders may sometimes stick to 7 to 8 m², while heavier ones or those who prefer to kitesurf more comfortably may aim for 10 to 11 m² if the wind drops. The right choice also depends a lot on the chosen navigation area in the bay and the actual state of the sea.

Weather & wind

The spot is mainly known for the Maestrale, which comes from NW and remains the reference wind for kitesurfing at Bosa Marina. It is the regime most often sought by local and visiting kitesurfers, as it generally provides clean and usable wind in the bay.

Depending on the day, the wind can be moderate to strong, with a reference value provided around 22.9 knots. When the Maestrale is strong, the spot becomes more consistent and allows for comfortable kitesurfing, but one must always check the state of the sea in the bay before heading out.

Climate

The climate at Bosa Marina is typically Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers. During the summer season, temperatures often range between 25 and 35°C, allowing for kitesurfing in a shorty or light wetsuit most of the time.

In winter, temperatures are milder than at many other European spots, with lows around 10°C. The best kitesurfing periods are generally spring, summer, and early autumn, although the spot can work irregularly depending on wind patterns. Conditions are therefore quite variable throughout the year, but the summer window remains the most comfortable for organizing a session.

Depth

The bottom is described as a mix of sand with rocky areas depending on the part of the beach. The depth becomes significant very quickly, which means one cannot rely on a large shallow area to manage the launch calmly.

One can only stand in a short distance, confirming that the spot requires good control of the kite and board from the very first seconds. The beach edge is therefore more suitable for independent riders than for true beginners.

Water temperature

In summer, the water is generally pleasant and allows for kitesurfing with a light wetsuit, or even without neoprene depending on individual sensitivity. This is the most comfortable period, with conditions close to warm to very mild.

In winter, the water remains cooler, and a thicker wetsuit becomes necessary. Even though the climate remains Mediterranean, one must prepare appropriate protection for off-season sessions, especially when the wind blows strongly and getting out of the water takes time.
