Rivedoux-Plage

The North beach of Rivedoux-Plage is located right at the foot of the bridge of the Île de Ré, ocean side. It forms a large open bay with a wide stretch of sand and a backdrop marked by the bridge and the village of Rivedoux.

It is a very busy spot, with a clearly marked area and a kite zone sign that reserves a large part of the beach for practitioners. The atmosphere is quite relaxed, with a strong community of local riders and the presence of a kitesurfing school directly on site.

Location

Detailed information

The North beach of Rivedoux is generally oriented north-east / south-west, which gives a rather side-shore to side-on wind depending on the orientations. With winds from NW to NE, the wind mainly arrives from the side relative to the shore, which is comfortable for most riders. With south winds, the wind becomes more irregular and less favorable than at the Rivedoux South spot, although some locals still ride here.

The large bay is protected from big waves, which gives a relatively flat or short choppy water surface. At low tide, one enjoys a wide shallow area with plenty of space for launching and freeride runs. At high tide, the water surface becomes more choppy, especially with the north-west thermal coming in the afternoon, but generally, no real formed wave is found.

The launching and landing area is on the beach, in the marked kite sector, far from swimming areas during the peak season. The sand is clean and flat, which facilitates line preparation. However, care must be taken to keep a distance from the bridge to the west and the navigation channel. Entry into the water is simple, without marked shore-break, but the width of the beach varies greatly with the tide.

Navigation mainly takes place in the bay, staying in front of the beach and avoiding drifting too much towards the bridge or out to sea. The spot works all day as there is always water in the bay, but comfort conditions change according to the tide level: more playful and choppy at high tide, easier and more reassuring at low tide. It is a spot widely used by schools, which shows that the water surface remains generally accessible to beginners, while offering enough space for experienced riders to send some jumps and long runs.

Locally, the spot is managed by associations and kite schools, with a real culture of sharing the water surface. It is important to respect the indicated zones, the instructions of the schools, and to remain very vigilant on busy days, as the sky can quickly fill with kites.
