Propriano

The beach of Capu Laurosu, located just 5 minutes south of Propriano in Southern Corsica, is one of the best-preserved wild expanses of the Valinco Gulf. Stretching about 3.5 to 4 kilometers of blonde sand, it offers a raw and authentic natural setting, away from the tourist hustle. The beach is divided into two areas by the Rizzanese River and benefits from a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains and the gulf.

It is a spot favored by kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts due to the regular breeze blowing in the bay. The constant but moderate wind allows for safe practice in a relatively sheltered bay. For families, the shallow waters near the shore make swimming accessible, while riders find interesting conditions offshore.

Access remains discreet despite its proximity to the town center, making it a well-kept secret. No shops on site: you need to bring your picnic and gear. It is a perfect place for those seeking the vastness and raw beauty of a preserved coastline.

Location

Detailed information

The beach of Capu Laurosu benefits from exposure to a regular wind that generally blows from the west to northwest. The wind is side-shore to side-on depending on conditions, creating varied situations for kitesurfing. The bay offers relative protection against strong winds, but on mistral days, the waves can become sporty and swimming risky.

The water surface is generally shallow near the shore, making it easy to launch and take off. The navigation area extends widely offshore, with gradual bottoms. Conditions vary with the tides: at low tide, the water surface may be flatter, while at high tide, conditions become more dynamic with more pronounced waves.

The Rizzanese River divides the beach into two distinct access areas. The northern area (Propriano side) offers easier access via the parking near the Arena Bianca hotel. The southern area (Portigliolo side) requires following the N196 then the D121, with several access paths to the beach. Riders should be attentive to marine weather conditions, especially on days of strong mistral.

Risks & Safety

  • On mistral days or with strong swell, swimming can become risky and requires confirmed experience and increased vigilance.

  • The Rizzanese River creates a more pronounced current in its area: avoid getting too close, especially after rain.

  • No surveillance or rescue service on site: always check marine weather before heading out and practice in groups if possible.

  • Access to the beach remains discreet and isolated: ensure you have enough water and supplies, and check conditions before venturing far from the shore.

  • Rocks may be exposed in certain areas: explore the beach at low tide to familiarize yourself with the topography before navigating.
