La Balancelle, also known as La Gracieuse, is a kitesurfing spot located in the bay of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, right in the heart of the Camargue Regional Natural Park. It is often accessed by boat from Port Napoléon, taking about fifteen minutes. This spot is popular with local schools for its shallow water and wild atmosphere.
Surrounded by preserved nature and not far from the industrial area of Fos-sur-Mer, this spot offers a unique contrast between tranquility and port activity. Locals come here for the quality of the wind and the available space. International championships have already taken place here.
Close to Olga beach and the Carteau cove, La Balancelle is part of a collection of family-friendly and sports spots in the region.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The La Balancelle spot offers a flat and shallow water surface, ideal for all levels. The wind orientation is generally side-on to side-shore with the Mistral coming from the north or northwest, which enters perfectly into the protected bay. The launch is from the wide grassy and sandy beach, with plenty of space for setup and takeoff.
The navigation area is vast, especially behind the port's dike where the water remains ultra-flat even with a bit of swell. In case of rare swell, a small wave called Josette forms in the middle of the bay. Conditions do not depend on tides, the water remains navigable at all times. Be careful not to navigate in the channel where boats pass.
Schools like Booster-Kite transport students by boat to the spot for an optimal session. Parking, showers, and toilets are available nearby on Carteau beach.
The ideal conditions are with a Mistral of 15-25 knots coming from the NW, which offers a smooth and consistent water surface. Force 3 to 5 Beaufort for all levels.
The water is flat and shallow over a large area, with a clean sandy bottom. Behind the dike, it is the ideal spot for perfect flat. Rarely any significant swell, except in extreme conditions where a small wave forms.
Currents are generally weak in the protected bay of La Balancelle. However, they can strengthen in the navigation channel near the port, where cargo ships pass. Tides have little impact on the spot, but always check the schedules to avoid risky areas.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical Mistral conditions. For lighter days, go up to 14 m², and down to 7 m² when it blows hard.
The dominant wind is the Mistral, a powerful wind from the northwest (NW) or north (N), which blows regularly and strongly in the region. It can reach high speeds, making the spot perfect for speed and freeride. The SE and SW directions also work well for a smooth water surface.
The Mediterranean climate of the Camargue offers mild temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 25-30°C and mild winters around 10-15°C. The region is very sunny, with more than 300 days of good weather per year. The best months for kitesurfing are from April to October, the most stable period.
The depth is gradual and shallow, with standing depth for more than 100 meters from the shore due to the sandy bottom. Perfect for beginners and waterstarts.
In summer (June-August), the water reaches 20-24°C. In spring and autumn, expect 15-19°C. In winter, it drops to around 12-14°C.
