Riding conditions

Stêr primarily works with East to Southeast winds, creating side-shore to side-on conditions that are highly appreciated. The spot is ideal at low tide, where the shallow water offers a very flat and safe surface, particularly for beginners and freestyle riders. At high tide, the water surface becomes more dynamic with a bit more depth.

Launching is done directly from the beach, with no major obstacles. The spot is suitable for both beginners and experienced riders due to its gradual configuration. Conditions remain stable and predictable most of the time, making it an excellent training ground. Local schools operate from this beach, which attests to its reliability and safety.

The ideal conditions at Stêr occur with winds of 12 to 18 knots from the East to Southeast, creating a perfect side-shore. These conditions offer a good balance between power and control, particularly appreciated by progressing riders. Winds from Northwest to West also work very well, with a slight side-on orientation that remains very manageable. The spot is accessible from 10 knots for experienced riders and can handle winds up to 25 knots without major issues.

Sea state

The water surface at Stêr is very flat at low tide, offering ideal conditions for freestyle and learning. At high tide, the spot may present a slight chop depending on wind and swell conditions. The Atlantic swell can sometimes reach the spot, particularly in autumn and winter, but it generally remains moderate and manageable. Waves are not the strong point of Stêr, which remains primarily a freeride and learning spot.

Sea currents

The general current at Stêr is generally weak to moderate, making the spot accessible to beginners. However, one must remain vigilant near the tip of La Torche, where the current can become more pronounced and outgoing. Tides play an important role in the dynamics of the spot: at low tide, the shallow water creates very stable conditions, while at high tide, the current can slightly intensify. It is recommended to be well-acquainted with the tide cycles before sailing.

Recommended kite size

For Stêr, the recommended kite sizes vary according to conditions and the rider's level. In light conditions (10-12 knots), a kite of 14 to 17 m² is ideal for medium-weight riders. In medium conditions (14-18 knots), kites of 12 to 14 m² offer the best control and versatility. In strong conditions (20+ knots), a kite of 9 to 11 m² becomes necessary. Beginners should prefer larger kites to facilitate takeoff and control.
