Plage du Rocher
France · Pays de la Loire
The Rocher beach, in Longeville-sur-Mer, is a large sandy beach bordered by the state forest and dunes. The atmosphere is quite family-friendly near the monitored access points, with a natural side as soon as you move away to the north or south.
It is a popular spot for sliding in Vendée, with consistent wind and beautiful Atlantic waves. The surf and water sports schools located on-site provide a real dynamic to the spot while maintaining a simple and pleasant setting.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
Rocher beach is a long sandy beach exposed directly west, facing the Atlantic. The wind predominantly blows between SW and NW, which often gives side-on or side-shore orientations from the right or left depending on the day, very suitable for kitesurfing. In west to southwest winds, it is more side-on from the right, while in northwest it approaches a side-shore from the right. South or north winds can become more onshore, with a choppy water surface that is less comfortable.
The water surface is influenced by the tide. At low tide, the beach is largely exposed, with a wide sandy foreshore and a generally more moderate shorebreak, which facilitates water entry but requires walking a bit to find enough water. At mid-tide and high tide, the waves form closer to the shore with a sometimes powerful shorebreak, especially in strong west swell. In these conditions, the spot becomes more technical, especially for kite takeoff and landing.
A specific area for kitesurfing is reserved in the municipality of Longeville-sur-Mer between access points LONGE 04 and LONGE 05, marked on land by information signs and at sea by yellow buoys. Even though this area is more towards Bouil beach, it is important to respect the signage and stay out of swimming areas and channels reserved for other water activities. At Rocher beach, surf and swimming zones are clearly marked during the season, and it is imperative to avoid them.
Water entry is done from the large sandy beach, with space to lay out lines outside of peak hours. In the height of summer, attendance is high near the main access and lifeguard station, so it is more comfortable for riders to move towards the ends of the beach, where there are fewer bathers. Takeoff and landing are ideally done with the help of an assistant, especially in strong wind or in the presence of shorebreak.
The spot is oriented towards waves. The sets are cleaner with west to northwest swell, with waves breaking over the sandy bottom. In light summer thermal winds, the water surface remains more choppy with small waves at the shore. In autumn and winter, Atlantic depressions generate more significant swell that can make the water surface demanding, reserved for riders already comfortable in waves.
Overall, Rocher beach is an interesting spot but not the easiest in Longeville for kitesurfing, especially compared to the more sheltered large bay of Bouil. It is better suited for intermediate to advanced riders looking for an accessible wave spot who know how to manage shorebreak and currents related to swell and tides.
