Le Lavandou

Saint-Clair beach in Le Lavandou, located on the Var coast in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a well-established kitesurf and wingfoil spot. It is a rather narrow but long beach, with direct access from the Boulevard de la Baleine. The spot offers consistent conditions throughout the year thanks to the steady winds that sweep the Mediterranean coast.

Le Lavandou is particularly appreciated by intermediate and advanced riders for its wingfoil potential. The water entry is directly from the waterfront sidewalk, making access convenient. It is a place where conditions can be demanding, especially due to the destructive shore break that forms during strong swells.

Location

Detailed information

The spot primarily works with an East wind that must exceed force 6 to generate interesting waves. With lighter winds, the water surface remains choppy but navigable. The wind orientation relative to the beach is generally side-shore to side-on when the East wind blows, creating acceptable conditions for kitesurfing.

The navigation area is subject to restrictions: towed devices (kitesurfing and wingfoiling) are not allowed to operate in the 300-meter coastal band outside the period from May 1 to October 30. During this summer period, only perpendicular movement to the shore towards the open sea is allowed. The rest of the year, navigation is freer but must respect a speed limit of 5 knots in designated areas.

Water entry is a bit more difficult than at the nearby La Favière, particularly due to the shore break. Avoid taking off too close to buildings or the port. The spot is more enjoyable for wingfoiling than for traditional kitesurfing according to local feedback.

Risks & Safety

  • The shore break is destructive and requires a high level of skill, especially during strong East swells.

  • Rocks are exposed in certain areas, particularly near the port, to be avoided during takeoff and landing.

  • Respect swimming zones and navigation restrictions, especially the 300-meter coastal band during the summer period.

  • Some venomous species may be present, although rarely visible in high-traffic areas. Be careful where you step.

  • The spot is more enjoyable for wingfoiling than for traditional kitesurfing due to limited space and coastal obstacles.
