Plage du Pas des Boeufs
France · Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Pas des Boeufs beach, south of Bois-Plage-en-Ré, stretches along a large sandy strip bordered by dunes and forest. It is accessible via parking lots and paths that lead directly to the beach, with an unobstructed view of the open sea.
This spot is frequented in summer by bathers and surfers, and is quieter off-season where riders enjoy a long waterfront exposed to the west. The atmosphere remains simple and relaxed, typical of the Île de Ré.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The beach is generally oriented west, facing the ocean, which gives a side-on to onshore wind from W and WNW, and side-shore from NW, the most suitable orientations for kitesurfing. With southwest winds, the wind also comes in, but with a more onshore dominance and sometimes a bit irregular. Land winds (E, NE, SE) should be avoided for kiting as they become offshore and disturbed by the dunes.
The spot works on all tides, but the configuration changes a lot. At mid-tide and high tide, there is a wide shorebreak and a water surface of the wave / big chop type, with cleaner wave lines when the west or northwest swell is well established. At low tide, the beach reveals a large sandy surface with banks that create shorter waves and chop, but water entry can be longer on foot, especially with small swell.
The water surface is rather open and exposed. In small swell and moderate wind, there is a regular chop, but as soon as the wind strengthens or the west swell rises, the spot takes on a true wave spot character, with sometimes powerful sets and a marked shorebreak. Navigation is mainly done by edging parallel to the beach on a long tack, with plenty of space to take long downwind tacks and work in the waves.
The water entry area is directly from the sand, with no jetty or port in the immediate vicinity, but one must deal with summer attendance. In summer, the beach is very crowded with bathers and surf schools, so it is essential to stay away from monitored swimming areas and prefer times of tide and hours when attendance decreases (early morning, evening, off-season). Off-season, the space for takeoff and landing is comfortable, but the wind can be stronger and the waves more challenging.
There is no sheltered lagoon or dedicated channel for kiting in this area: one rides in open water, on a spot typical of the Atlantic Ocean. Winds from the W to NW are the most interesting for a safety / wave quality compromise. In strong west winds, gusts are generally well felt on the beach since there are almost no wind obstacles. The spot is mainly suitable for riders already comfortable in waves and shorebreak. Beginners can quickly be overwhelmed by the combination of wind + swell + current, especially during high tide.
