Plage des Minimes
France · Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Minimes beach in La Rochelle, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a popular urban spot for kiters and windsurfers, right next to the Minimes port. It is easily accessible from the city center, with a view of the iconic towers and the hustle of the port. It is a lively place where locals and visitors mingle, perfect for after-work sessions.
The spot works well with winds from west to northwest, offering a relatively sheltered water surface due to the islands offshore. The beach is wide, with nearby parking, but it becomes very crowded in summer with bathers and families.
Kiting is prohibited in the summer season for safety reasons, but it remains ideal off-season for experienced riders who enjoy flat to chop in the city.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The Minimes beach is oriented west, which means that west winds are onshore directly on the beach, making launching sometimes technical with chop. The best winds are side-on from the northwest or side-shore from the southwest, allowing for more offshore navigation without being pushed too much towards the shore. The navigation area extends in front of the beach, between the Minimes port to the north and the more exposed area to the south, with good width for freeride and light waves from west swells.
Launching is done directly from the sand, easy at high tide but steeper at low tide where rocky areas may appear near the port. Kite launching is possible on the wide beach, but be careful of walkers and fishing lines. The water surface is generally flat to chop with light winds, with moderate chop from strong onshore winds; at high tide, the water rises to the beach edge and offers more space, while at low tide, the depth decreases and the spot remains navigable at all tides according to sources. Local feature: the islands of Ré and Oléron partially protect from swells, but strong west winds (>25 kts) create surfable waves of 1m+ for experienced riders.
During sessions, stay offshore from the port access channel and avoid drifting towards the marked swimming areas in summer. The spot is validated for windsurfing, wingfoiling, and kiting, with good potential for strapless on windy days.
