Informations utiles
The Baie de Sans-Souci benefits from a dominant east-northeast wind, typical of trade winds, blowing onshore or side-on relative to the southeast-facing beach. The water surface remains flat thanks to the coral barrier offshore that protects from Atlantic swell.
The navigation area extends for several hundred meters with a shallow depth everywhere, ideal for direct launching from the sandy beach. Launching is done on grass or sand at the edge of the bay, be careful of the proximity to the mangroves to avoid snags.
At low tide, the flat area dries out at the edges, forcing navigation further offshore towards the buoys marking the regulated kite zone. The best runs are towards Pointe Sans-Souci where the wind is more consistent, but stay within the marked corridors to avoid fishermen and boats.
The ideal conditions are an east-northeast wind at 15-20 knots, side-on, with a flat water surface and rising tide to maximize the rideable area.
The water surface is generally flat to light chop, perfect for freestyle or foil. Protected by coral, the bay avoids waves, even with strong trade winds, providing a safe space to progress.
Currents are weak in the protected bay, but they can strengthen near the channels leading to the mangroves. Tides have a moderate range of about 1 meter, influencing the depth of the flat area without creating strong swells.
Opt for 9m and 12m sizes to cover most sessions, or 8m and 11m for smaller riders. In light morning wind, go for 12-14m.
The trade winds blow regularly from east-northeast between 12 and 20 knots, especially from November to May. This constant wind pattern makes the bay reliable for daily sessions, with stronger gusts in the afternoon.
The tropical climate of Martinique offers constant temperatures around 28-30°C year-round, with a dry season from December to May ideal for kiting. The months from June to November are wetter with short showers, but the best months for wind are January, February, March, April, May, August, September, October, November, and December.
The depth is gradual and shallow, with a sandy bottom mixed with shells. You can stand up to 200-300 meters from the shore on the flat area.
The water remains warm year-round between 25 and 30°C, with no need for a wetsuit even in the cool season from January to March around 26-28°C.
