Egypt
Baby Bay is a small curved cove located just behind the sand spit in Dahab, South Sinai, Egypt. It is a calm and sheltered spot, perfect for kitesurfing beginners who want to progress safely.
The beach has fine, soft sand, with an easy launch. The wind here is a bit lighter but cleaner than elsewhere, with not too many obstacles to practice relaunches and transitions.
Many kite schools start their sessions here, thanks to the compact space and shallow conditions that allow for a focus on technique.
The wind arrives in a cross-shore or side-on direction relative to the north-south oriented beach, blowing from the northwest consistently due to the venturi effect between the Sinai and Arabian mountains. This is ideal for beginners in the sheltered cove, with a flat and shallow water surface near the shore.
The launch is directly from the wide, accessible sandy beach, with an uncluttered take-off area. Riders navigate in the small curved bay, then can head downwind towards slightly choppy areas to progress.
Be aware, kitesurfing is often restricted or supervised here to avoid conflicts with neighboring windsurfers; some schools specify that it is prohibited in Baby Bay itself, but allowed downwind of zone 2. The space is compact, perfect for relaunches, but stay within the limits for collective safety. In strong wind, the water remains clean but the current can strengthen downwind.
The ideal conditions are a cross-shore NW wind of 12 to 25 knots, stable and without gusts, for a flat water surface and smooth progression. Avoid days that are too light when the wind is too weak in the bay.
The water surface is perfectly flat in the cove, with a sandy and shallow bottom ideal for beginners. Downwind, it becomes a bit choppy with small non-breaking swell.
Close to the shore, the water is calm and crystal clear, perfect for freestyle and blasting once comfortable.
The current is generally weak in the sheltered bay, but it can strengthen downwind towards more open areas or near the channels. Tides are moderate in the Gulf of Aqaba, with no major impact on navigation here.
Be cautious in downwind areas where the current can quickly pull you towards the reef.
For beginners at Baby Bay, plan for sizes 12 to 15 m² in light to moderate wind. Intermediates opt for 9 to 12 m² when the wind rises to 20 knots.
The main wind is the khamsin or northwest wind, regularly blowing at 15 to 30 knots, stronger in the afternoon due to the canyon effect. It blows every day, with a score of 97/100 and usable conditions all year round.
Dominant direction NW, cross-shore on Baby Bay, a bit lighter here than outside but very consistent and clean for learning.
The climate in Dahab is warm and dry all year round, with daytime temperatures between 25°C in winter and 35-40°C in summer. The best months for kitesurfing are from October to April for reliable wind and pleasant temperatures around 28-32°C.
In summer, the heat is intense but the wind cools, and the water remains warm. There is no rainy season, just constant sunshine and a backdrop of red mountains and turquoise water.
The depth is gradual and shallow near the shore, with feet up to 50-100 meters depending on the tide. The bottom is mostly sandy, ideal for falls and relaunches.
The water of the Red Sea is warm all year round, around 22-24°C in winter (January-March) and 28-30°C in summer (June-September). A short lycra is sufficient outside the cold season.
