Langeland
Hesselbjerg Strand, on the south of Langeland in Southern Denmark Region, is a popular spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The Østersøbadet beach offers a wide space with a beach café nearby.
The area south of the pier is perfect for nice waves when the wind is well placed. It is a quiet place outside the summer season, ideal for sailing without too many people.
Locals come here for the easy access and varied conditions, between flat water and small waves.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

Useful information
The spot works well with winds from south, southwest, west, and northwest, which come side-on to side-off depending on the exact direction relative to the west-facing beach. The main sailing area is to the south of the pier, where nice waves form for kite surfing.
Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, wide and easy to access. Use the beach for kite takeoff, but stay away from swimmers especially around the pier in summer. The water is shallow near the shore with sandy banks at low tide, allowing you to sail far from the shore to avoid changing waves.
During the June 1 to August 31 period, it is allowed and optimal for flat water dreaming, but off-season it is quieter. Park at the large parking lot of Strandcaféen or in the small parking lots along the gravel road. Public toilets are available behind the café.
Ideal conditions are with winds S, SW, W, NW at 15-25 knots, for good side-on generating surfable waves south of the pier.
The water state mixes chop and small waves south of the pier, with flat possible in sheltered areas. At low tide, several sandbars close to the shore create shallow conditions.
Sail away from the shore to avoid unpredictable waves near the beach.
Strong currents can occur, especially near the pier and in exposed areas. Tides influence the sandy banks near the shore at low tide.
Tide amplitudes are moderate in the Baltic Sea, with no strong dependence for kitesurfing.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in moderate winds, and 7 to 9 m² when it picks up with depressions.
The wind is frontal, typical of Atlantic depressions, with dominant directions SW, W, NW. The strengths vary from 12-20 knots on average throughout the year, more consistent from April to October.
No local thermal wind, but reliable sessions with depression systems.
The climate in Southern Denmark is temperate oceanic with mild summers around 18-20°C and cool winters around 0-5°C. Windy seasons extend from spring to autumn, with normal conditions combining in spring and autumn.
In summer, a shorty is often sufficient due to the warmer water.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. It is shallow near the shore due to the sandbars, and you can stand for a good distance at low tide.
In summer (June-August), the water is around 18°C. In spring and autumn, expect 10-15°C, requiring a full wetsuit.
