Aalbæk

Aalbæk Strand, on the north coast of Denmark, is a wide and open beach facing the North Sea. It is a popular spot for local kitesurfers due to its generous space and wind exposure.

The area remains quiet off-season, with a simple and authentic atmosphere near the small port of Aalbæk Havn. The dunes provide some protection to the beach, and you often find surfers and windsurfers as well.

Easy access from the coastal road, with nearby parking to load gear without hassle.

Conditions de navigation

The spot works well with winds from NNE to E, which come in side-on perfect on the north-facing beach. For west winds, it is more side-shore, ideal for freeride and light waves. The launch area is directly from the wide sand, with no major obstacles, and the take-off zone is spacious on the beach.

The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, with enough space to maneuver even when it is crowded. Be cautious of boats leaving the port of Aalbæk Havn to the east, stay alert and launch a bit to the west to avoid the area.

The water surface varies with the tide: at low tide, it reveals some areas near the shore but remains navigable beyond, while at high tide, it is more uniform. On strong wind days, gusts can rise quickly, so check the forecasts for high gusts.

Vent ideal
NNWdominant
E
NE
SE
S

The ideal conditions hover around 12-20 knots in NNE or E, for a smooth to moderate chop water surface with small waves.

État de la mer

The water surface is generally chop with a small comfortable swell around 0.8 m, perfect for moderate wave riding. In side-on wind, it forms nice small waves without being too powerful.

Courants marins

The currents remain moderate due to low tidal ranges, with high coefficients around 70-80 that slightly increase the flow near the port. At high tide, heights reach 0.1 to 0.4 m, and at low -0.5 to -0.7 m relative to zero.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for 9 to 12 m² sizes in standard conditions, drop to 7-9 m² when it picks up, and go up to 11-13 m² on light days.

Météo & vent

The winds are consistent due to the northern exposure, often from NNE or E in mid-season, with strengths around 8-12 knots on average and gusts up to 17 knots. There is no specific local name, but it is constant sea wind, especially in the afternoon.

Climat

The climate is typical of the North Sea, with cool temperatures year-round. In spring, the air ranges between 10 and 20°C, summer can rise up to 30°C in good weather, and autumn drops back to 10-16°C. The kite season runs from April to November, but it is also feasible in winter with suitable gear.

Profondeur

The depth increases gradually with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand at a good distance from the shore, even at low tide.

Température de l’eau

The water is cool: 8-13°C in spring, 18-23°C in summer, and around 10°C in autumn. A 5/4 mm wetsuit is mandatory most of the time.
