One Foot Island, in the lagoon of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, is a very popular spot for kitesurfing in a postcard-like setting. Access is usually by boat, and the spot is especially appreciated for its shallow water and great ease of reading.
It is a place favored by riders looking for flat water and a very safe environment to progress or work on maneuvers. The areas around the motus offer plenty of space, with a sandy bottom and a very lagoon-like atmosphere.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The spot mainly works in the lagoon around One Foot Island, with navigation most often occurring in side-on to side-shore depending on the exact area chosen in the lagoon and the wind direction of the day. Local sources and kite schools indicate that it is often necessary to go by boat to the sandbanks and motus to find the best areas, notably Honeymoon and One Foot. The water surface is generally very clean, with many flat areas and little chop when staying sheltered from the more exposed passages.
Launching is done from boats or from the cleared sandy areas around the island, with particular attention to the takeoff and landing of the kite, as space can be limited near certain motus. The spot is said to be suitable for all levels, but it is more comfortable when one already has some skill in piloting, especially to manage changes in depth and areas more frequented by excursions. At low tide, one often enjoys a vast shallow plateau, while at high tide some passes and lagoon edges become more technical. The best ride is found in the open areas of the lagoon, far from the edges near reefs and channels.
