The spot most often works with a side-shore to side-on wind depending on the flow orientation over the lagoon. It is a shallow lagoon site, with a rather smooth water surface in the sheltered areas and slightly more marked water when the wind comes in stronger. Navigation mainly occurs in the flat part of the lagoon, while staying attentive to the shallow areas and sandbanks that appear depending on the tide.
Launching generally occurs from an easily accessible sandy area, with enough space to rig and take off. The spot is interesting for beginners and intermediate riders, as there is often knee-deep water in a good part of the usable area. However, one must remain vigilant outside the central area, as water level variations can quickly reduce the margin above the bottom.
When the wind is well established, Akaiami offers very clean navigation with little chop and ample space to work on maneuvers. In stronger winds or when more oriented towards the opening of the lagoon, some portions become more choppy, but the spot generally maintains a flat and reassuring profile for progression.
