The Lagoon of Lagoon at Mayapo, in La Guajira, Colombia, is an isolated spot in the heart of the Guajiro desert, territory of the Wayuus. It is easily accessible from Riohacha in a 30-minute drive, with a white sandy beach right next to it for ocean sessions.
It is a calm and uncrowded place, perfect for riders looking for authenticity with its mangroves and flat water. Schools like Coco Kite have a station directly on the beach, with a rescue boat.
The spot alternates between the lagoon for flat and the beach for side-on, in a wild setting of dunes and desert.

The lagoon works ideally with east side-offshore wind in the morning, which turns to northeast side-onshore around 10am-2pm. This is perfect for safe riding, with easy access from the grassy or sandy edges of the lagoon.
The riding area is wide and shallow, up to the hips, surrounded by mangroves that protect from chop. For takeoff, we use the main beach of Mayapo when the wind is side-on to on, or we transport to the lagoon in case of offshore.
The water remains flat to choppy depending on the tide and wind, with downwind sessions possible to other spots. Schools offer boat services for rescues and organized trips.
The ideal conditions are 20-30 kts northeast side-on for the beach, or east side-offshore for the flat lagoon. Constant force without gusts for long sessions.
The water is super smooth and flat in the lagoon, with a shallow bottom ideal for tricks. On the beach of Mayapo, it becomes choppy with onshore wind, but remains navigable.
Few people on the water, private atmosphere even in high season.
The currents are weak in the lagoon, making it safe for learning and progressing. On the ocean beach, they can be more pronounced, especially with strong winds.
Tides have little influence on the lagoon, but check for the beach where the water rises and falls moderately.
Plan for kite sizes of 9 to 12m² for the typical wind of 20-30 kts. Smaller like 7-9m for very strong days, and 11-13m if it calms down.
The wind is consistent and strong from December to September, with incredible stats around 20-30 kts. In the morning, it is often side-offshore from the east, then it shifts to northeast side-onshore in the afternoon.
All months are good, from January to December, with no real dead season.
The climate in La Guajira is warm and dry all year round, with temperatures around 28-35°C during the day. The rainy season is short and allows the lagoon to fill for perfect flat.
It is a coastal desert with low humidity, ideal for riding for long periods without excessive fatigue.
La lagune est très peu profonde, eau jusqu'aux hanches sur une grande zone, avec un fond sableux et herbeux. On a pied partout, parfait pour débutants.
The water of the Caribbean Sea is warm, around 26-29°C all year round. In the lagoon, it is similar, with no need for a wetsuit during the day.
