Informations utiles
The beach of Strand in Oostduinkerke-Bad is oriented northwest, making WNW and NW winds side-on perfect for riding. Onshore north winds work well too, but avoid offshore south winds that push out to sea.
The riding area extends about 2-3 km along the beach, with easy access on sand. Launching is done directly on the wide beach, but respect the marked zones for schools. During busy times, ride offshore to avoid beginners near the shore.
With the tides, the water surface changes little as the slope is gentle, but at low tide the beach widens significantly, ideal for schooling. On windy days, 1-2m waves form, making the spot more wave-oriented.
Ideal conditions are winds of 15-25 kts from NW or WNW, side-on, with a moderately choppy water surface.
The water surface is generally choppy with wind, and turns to waves at force 5+. The sandy bottom ensures good visibility, with no major obstacles.
The currents are moderate, influenced by the tides of the North Sea with a range of 4-5m. They remain weak near the beach but can accelerate offshore or near the channels.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² in typical conditions, smaller like 7-9m² in strong wind, and 12-14m² when it's light.
The wind is consistent due to exposure to the North Sea, with a dominant regime from NW to W. The best sessions occur in autumn and winter, when Atlantic depressions bring steady winds of 15-25 kts.
The coastal climate is temperate, with cool temperatures year-round. Summers are mild around 20°C, while winters drop to 5°C. Rainfall is frequent, especially in autumn.
The depth gradually increases over a clean sandy bottom. You can stand up to about 50-100m from the shore depending on the tide.
The water is cold: 8-12°C in winter, 16-20°C in summer. A full wetsuit is mandatory year-round.
