Informations utiles
The spot of Strand in Middelkerke works well with sideshore WSW, W, or WNW winds, which are the most regular and effective directions for navigation. Onshore NW wind is possible but reduces beach space at high tide. The navigation area is about 350m long, with direct access to the clean sand without downwind obstacles.
At low tide, the beach is very wide with generous space for takeoff and landing, ideal for beginners. At high tide, it reduces to about 60m wide, but remains navigable if the wind is not too onshore. The water surface is shallow near the shore, with sandy bottom and some shells. You can ride in flat to chop on calm days, and small to medium waves with depressions.
The zones are marked for kiting, with schools on site for launch assistance. Be cautious of bathers in summer, but space is sufficient off-season. Tides strongly influence the available space, always check the schedules.
Ideal conditions are with sideshore WSW 15-25 knots, at mid-tide for a good balance of space and flat to chop water surface. Perfect for freeride and small waves.
The water surface offers flat and chop in light conditions, evolving to small and medium waves with strong wind or swell. The bottom is clean sandy with some shells, shallow near the shore. Clean and without major obstacles.
Currents are generally weak along the Belgian coast. The tides are significant, with a moderate tidal range that mainly affects the beach space rather than strong currents. No major channel reported here.
Big gear like 12-15m is often used for the usual light winds, but 7-10m during nuking depressions. Adjust according to weight and level.
The wind regime is dominated by frontal depression winds, often sideshore WSW or W, with variable strengths. Kiting is often done with big gear, but depressions can make it nuking. In hot summer, thermal sea breezes sometimes form. Reliability: 1 in 2 days in good months, 1 in 10 in bad.
The coastal climate is oceanic temperate, with mild summers around 20-30°C and cold winters between 0-15°C. The main season runs from March to November, with wetsuits required most of the time. In autumn and spring, conditions are optimal for wind.
The depth is progressive and shallow near the shore with a sandy bottom. You can stand for a good distance at low tide.
The water reaches 20°C in summer, around 10°C in winter. Wetsuit 3/2mm summer, 5/4mm + neoprene shoes winter.
