Tarifa - Balneario
Spain
Tarifa
Balneario is an iconic spot in Tarifa, located right next to the port and under the castle. It is a popular place for experienced riders due to its demanding conditions and lively atmosphere in the city.
The fine sandy beach stretches about 150 meters, with bars and parking nearby. Public showers are available for a good part of the year.
The spot is closed to kitesurfing from June 15 to September 15, but remains open the rest of the time for advanced and expert.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
- 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
- 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
- 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
- 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Useful information
Balneario mainly works with the Levante, an east offshore wind that can reach up to 45 knots and create intense conditions for freestyle or big air. With the Poniente (west), it is side-on-shore with a chop water surface and small waves of 1 meter, even more in case of swells of 2 meters on average, perfect for surfkite.
The north wind is rare (5% of the days) but offers a constant side-shore with a slightly choppy ocean, ideal for surfkite in medium to strong swell. The navigation area is small and technical, with direct launching from the sandy beach without pebbles. Be careful to stay within the authorized area, especially out of the summer season when there is no rescue boat.
The beach faces the Atlantic Ocean, near the Isla de la Paloma which separates the Atlantic and Mediterranean. For launching, prefer the clear areas near the port, but the spot is narrow so be vigilant about kite traffic.
Ideal conditions are a moderate to strong Levante for freestyle on flat water, or Poniente with medium swell for surfkite. Constant wind above 20 knots to fully exploit the spot.
The water surface is often chop to very choppy with rough waves under Levante, and more wavy under Poniente with swells of 1 to 2 meters, up to 4-5 meters in rare storms. The bottom is entirely sandy with no rocks on the beach.
Currents are generally moderate but can intensify near the port and the boat channel. Tides influence the water surface, making some hazards invisible at high tide.
Opt for smaller sizes like 7 to 9 m² under strong Levante, and 9 to 11 m² under softer Poniente. Adjust according to your weight and style, as the wind can gust up to 45 knots.
The wind regime is dominated by the Levante from the east (50% of the days), constant and strong, directly offshore. The Poniente from the west follows with 40% of the days, side-on-shore and steady. North wind is rare but reliable.
The climate in Tarifa is Mediterranean with Atlantic influences, with pleasant temperatures year-round between 15 and 23°C from April to October. The best months are April-June and September-October for a good balance of wind/heat, while summer is hotter but crowded and closed to kite.
Mild winter with strong winds possible, but fewer restrictions.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom everywhere. You can stand near the shore, ideal for launching, but it drops off quickly beyond.
Water temperatures range from 15-16°C in winter/spring to 20-23°C in summer. A 5/3 mm wetsuit is recommended outside the summer season.
