Texel

Strand Paal 9, on the southwest coast of Texel, is a popular spot for its natural setting and calm atmosphere. The beach is wide, with dunes in the background and often a more relaxed crowd compared to the more exposed spots on the island.

It is a place that appeals to riders looking for easy access to the sea and navigation in an open environment. The atmosphere remains laid-back, with a true sense of space on this stretch of the North Sea coast.

The spot mainly works with a wind from W to NW, which generally arrives in side-shore or side-on depending on the exact angle. On this North Sea coast, this provides often clean conditions for navigation, with enough space to easily go out and return to the shore.

Launching is done from the large sandy beach, on flat and clear terrain. Take-off is generally simple, but one must keep space to set up the kite as the area is frequented by walkers and the beach can be wide at low tide as well as at high tide.

The water surface varies with the tide. At low tide, there are more sandbanks and shallow areas that can calm the water near the edge. At high tide, the shorebreak can become more present and the useful area tightens, with a more active water surface. The spot remains more comfortable for riders who are at ease with launching and returning in soft sand and varying water levels.

The best sessions occur with a wind from W to NW, stable and clean enough to navigate without too much gust effect. An intensity around 20 to 30 knots often corresponds to a good window for this spot, with enough pull to exploit the width of the beach and the dynamics of the North Sea.

The most interesting months are often January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November, and December, when Atlantic depressions more regularly bring wind. The spot remains interesting even if the water stays cold for a large part of the year.

État de la mer

The water surface is most often a mix of chop and smoother areas depending on the tide and wind direction. When the wind is well-oriented and steady, one can find fairly clean sections near the sandbanks.

With strong west winds, the North Sea can quickly become more physical, with short, small waves and choppy conditions. However, the spot remains readable for a rider who knows how to manage the surface variations related to the underwater relief and tidal movements.

Courants marins

Currents can be strong on this stretch of coast, especially with swell, sustained wind, and tidal effects. One must remain attentive to lateral drifts and areas where water accelerates near sandbanks or passes.

The tide plays a real role in the width of the beach and in reading the spot. At low tide, some areas become very shallow, while at high tide the useful sand strip decreases and water movements can strengthen near the edge.

Taille de kite recommandée

With a wind around 24.6 knots, the most suitable sizes are often 7 m², 8 m², or 9 m² depending on the rider's size and level. On lighter days, 10 m² and 11 m² remain useful to enjoy softer sessions.

At this spot, it is better to plan for a fairly wide range of kite sizes, as the wind can pick up quickly on the west coast of Texel. Heavier or less powerful riders may sometimes prefer a slightly larger kite to maintain comfort in the chop.

Météo & vent

The most interesting wind regime is often dominated by westerly and northwesterly flows, typical of the North Sea. These winds arrive well on the beach and most often offer a usable orientation in side-shore or side-on.

With the provided data, a wind around 24.6 knots corresponds to a day already well-established for dynamic navigation. The spot then takes on character, especially if the wind is steady and the tide does not complicate the beach exit.

Climat

The climate in Texel is oceanic, with cool, humid, and windy winters, and moderate rather than hot summers. The wind remains a central element of the spot for a large part of the year.

The most pleasant months for kitesurfing are often spring and late summer, when temperatures become more comfortable without losing the exposed character of the coastline. In winter, the air is significantly colder and the wind chill drops quickly.

Profondeur

The depth is gradual with a mainly sandy bottom. One can often stand quite far from the shore depending on the tide, which facilitates launching and returning to shore in good conditions.

The underwater relief changes with the sandbanks, which can create very shallow areas at low tide. Therefore, it is important to read the spot before launching, especially when the water level changes quickly.

Température de l’eau

The water is cold for a large part of the year in the North Sea. In winter, it generally stays around 5 to 8 °C, which requires a warm wetsuit and often suitable accessories.

In spring and autumn, the water often hovers around 8 to 15 °C. In summer, it becomes more bearable, but it rarely gets really warm, with temperatures often around 15 to 19 °C.
