Le Morne

The Kitesurfing Beach in Le Morne, in the Rivière Noire district of Mauritius, is nestled at the foot of the Morne mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This legendary spot attracts riders from around the world thanks to its immense and protected turquoise lagoon, perfect for kitesurfing with the mountain as a backdrop.

The lagoon offers a dedicated area for beginners with shallow water, while more experienced riders can head towards the choppier areas. Several schools like ION Club or Son of Kite offer courses and rentals on-site, in a friendly atmosphere.

It’s a place where kite, freeride, and waves mix easily, set in a paradise-like environment with a golf course and spa nearby.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot is exposed to the dominant east and southeast winds, which blow onshore in the beginner area of the lagoon, with a super flat and shallow water surface ideal for learning and freeriding. Moving 200 meters upwind, the wind becomes side-shore port, with a bit of chop perfect for jumps and freestyle, and at 400 meters from the shore, beautiful waves form due to the seabed.

Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a dedicated and wide take-off area in the main lagoon. Beginners stay in the kite lagoon to the south, safe and secure even in off or side-off wind, while advanced riders head out to the waves. Tides have little influence on the spot due to the constant depth of the lagoon, but always check the timings to avoid overly calm moments.

The wind is consistent year-round, with 300 days of possible navigation, particularly reliable from May to November. Prefer the morning light or late afternoon to ride with the most beautiful landscapes.

Edominant
SEdominant
S
SW

Ideal conditions occur with an east to southeast wind between 15 and 25 knots, onshore in the lagoon for beginners or side-shore for waves and freestyle.

Sea state

The water surface is flat and shallow in the main lagoon, perfect for beginners or freeriding. Going upwind, you find light chop for jumping, and waves of 0.5 to 2 meters 400 meters from the shore with a side-onshore wind.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak in the protected lagoon, but they can strengthen near the passes or when heading out to the waves. Tides are moderate in Mauritius, with an amplitude of about 1 meter, having no major impact on navigation in the kite lagoon.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes of 9 to 11 m² for beginners in the flat lagoon, and switch to 7-9 m² for side-shore sessions with waves or jumps.

Weather & wind

The dominant trade winds come from the east and southeast, blowing between 15 and 25 knots almost every day, with over 300 days of wind per year. The pattern is very reliable, particularly from May to November, but navigable year-round.

Climate

The tropical climate of Le Morne is mild year-round, with temperatures around 25 to 30°C during the day. The austral winter from May to November is the season of dry and windy trade winds, while summer from December to April is warmer and more humid with occasional showers.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a mostly sandy bottom in the lagoon. You can stand up to about fifty meters from the shore, ideal for first sessions without straps.

Water temperature

The water remains warm year-round between 24 and 28°C, peaking at 28°C in the austral summer and a minimum of 24°C in winter.
