Plage de Soulac
France · Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Soulac beach, located on the Atlantic coast in Soulac-sur-Mer in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a kitesurfing spot by the Gironde estuary. It is a favorite place for riders due to its easy access from Bordeaux and its family-friendly atmosphere during the season.
The spot offers a wide beach with parking and showers nearby, ideal for setting up gear without stress. Locals often ride here, especially off-season when the conditions are just right.
Close to Lacanau, it serves as a backup when the spots further south are crowded, with a water surface influenced by tides and the estuary.
Historische Monatsmittel — keine Live-Vorhersage.
Soulac beach is oriented west, which means that east and southeast winds are the best, in side-shore or side-on for a clean water surface. The dominant morning wind comes from the northeast, and in the afternoon it often shifts to west-northwest, sometimes onshore which can chop up the water surface.
Launching is done directly from the wide, gradual sandy beach, with a take-off zone in the center to avoid the northern areas. The riding area extends in front of the beach, but you should stay to the south to avoid drifting towards the estuary. At low tide, the water surface is more flat to choppy with possible holes, while at high tide, it becomes more choppy with waves up to 1.8 m influenced by ocean swell.
Local peculiarity: the influence of the Gironde estuary creates variable currents depending on the tides, and the swell is reduced compared to spots further south, but remains powerful from 1.5 m. Prefer the incoming tide for more comfort. In summer, check local rules as navigation may be regulated like in neighboring Lacanau.
