Horse Shoe Cove is oriented to receive a side-shore to side-on wind when the wind comes from the West (W) and West-Northwest (WNW), which is the ideal direction for this spot. The SW wind (southwest) in summer creates a thermal sea breeze of 12 to 18 kts, while the NE winds in autumn bring stronger but sometimes stormy conditions.
The water is flat and deep progressive with a sandy bottom. You can stand up to 50 meters from the shore, allowing for a safe launch. The main navigation area is located in the Raritan Bay, protected from ocean currents, but care should be taken near the channel where tidal currents can be strong and separate the rider from their board.
Launching is generally done at lot C of Sandy Hook, but it is prohibited to launch from this parking lot. The recommended launching is on the beach, near lot C, avoiding areas of maritime traffic and boats. The currents can be marked near the channel, so vigilance is necessary.
