Penmarch

The beach of La Torche, located in Penmarch in southern Brittany, is a legendary spot for sliding in the bay of Audierne. Facing directly west, it attracts riders from all over the world thanks to its vast expanse of fine sand and consistent Atlantic winds.

It is a protected place where surfing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing coexist year-round. The dunes and rocky point add to the raw charm of this authentic corner of Finistère.

With its parking, schools, and restaurants on-site, it is easily accessible from Quimper or Pont-l'Abbé.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The beach is oriented directly west, which means that westerly and southwesterly winds come in perfectly in side-onshore, making it safe and ideal for kitesurfing. Takeoff is directly on the large sandy beach, with plenty of space even when crowded.

The navigation area is marked by a kitesurf channel with yellow buoys set up by the municipality towards the middle of the bay, near the point, to avoid surfing areas. At low tide, a vast hard sand beach appears and offers space to set down the kite or practice land sailing, while at high tide, the water opens up widely.

The waves form a beach break on a sandy bottom, with powerful areas for wave riding and calmer parts for freestyle. Easy water entry everywhere on the beach, but stay in the channel for safety.

Ideal wind
NWdominant
W
SW

The ideal conditions are with a westerly or southwesterly wind in side-onshore, between 18 and 25 knots. This allows for safe sessions with power for waves or freestyle.

Sea state

The water state is choppy with waves in general, forming a beach break on sand. The waves often reach 2-3 meters, ideal for wave riding but manageable for freeride.

At low tide, it calms down a bit with more flat space on the wet sand.

Sea currents

The currents are lateral and can be significant, especially near the channels and the channel. One must remain vigilant, particularly during periods of heavy swell.

The tides have a significant amplitude in the bay of Audierne, quickly changing the water surface.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 9 to 12 m² in moderate westerly winds, and drop to 7-9 m² when it exceeds 25 knots. In side-onshore, tubular kites work well for waves.

Weather & wind

The wind regime is dominated by Atlantic depressions, with frequent and regular westerly and southwesterly winds. The beach perfectly captures these Atlantic trade winds, offering consistent quality.

Wind strengths typically range from 15 to 30 knots, with safe side-onshore sessions.

Climate

The Breton oceanic climate offers mild temperatures year-round, around 10-15°C in winter and 18-22°C in summer. The seasons are marked by Atlantic depressions that bring wind and regular swell.

The best months for kitesurfing are from September to April with more consistent winds, but the spot works well all year round.

Depth

The depth is gradual on a sandy bottom typical of a beach break. You can stand for a good distance at low tide, facilitating entry and safety.

Water temperature

Water temperatures range from 10-12°C in winter to 16-18°C in summer. A 5/4 mm wetsuit is essential year-round, with a shorty in August.
