La Grande-Motte

The Couchant Beach in La Grande-Motte, Occitanie, is a large beach that starts west of the port near the nautical center. It is located in the Couchant district and offers easy access with a large free parking area nearby. A designated kitesurf area is set up against the west quay of the port, ideal for independent and advanced practitioners.

This beach is equipped with lifeguard stations, sports areas like volleyball and football, and a cycling promenade that runs along it to Grand Travers. The technical equipment preparation areas are reserved on the beach, covering an area of about 1500 m².

The spot is appreciated for its relatively flat water and regular wind conditions, especially from the southeast.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The kitesurfing area is located between the west dam of the port and the nautical center, marked by buoys 300 meters from the shore. Riders must take off and land in this area, then navigate beyond 300 meters. Launching is done directly from Couchant Beach, access no. 14-15, with reserved technical areas for setting up equipment. In southeast wind (side-on to side-off depending on the angle), it is the best for this spot, with a water surface that can become wave when the waves break against the dam, perfect for surfkiting. In south or southwest wind, it is side-shore, with a choppy to wavy water surface near the port. Tides have little impact on the water surface, which remains navigable in average and high seas, but check the coefficients for outings. Be cautious of buffer zones prohibited for swimming and beach equipment when kiting is active. The wind must exceed 5 knots to activate the zones, and force 5 Beaufort in S/SE for a good session. Avoid navigating in the access channels to the port or mooring areas.

Ideal wind
Sdominant
SEdominant
SWdominant

The ideal conditions are a southeast to south wind of force 5 Beaufort or more, side-on, for surfable waves and a dynamic water surface. The southwest thermals in summer are perfect for flat to choppy sessions.

Sea state

The water is relatively flat in light wind, but becomes choppy or wavy from the southeast with waves breaking against the port's dam. This is ideal for surfkiting in marine conditions.

Sea currents

The current is generally weak along the beach, but it can strengthen near the access channels to the port and mooring areas. Mediterranean tides are low, with a tidal range of about 30 cm, having little impact on navigation.

Recommended kite size

Choose sizes from 9 to 11 m² for light southwest thermal wind, 7 to 9 m² for moderate southeast, and 6 to 8 m² in strong Tramontane.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind is the Tramontane from the northwest, side-shore to offshore, often strong and consistent. From the southeast or south, it is the sea breeze that provides side-on sessions with good waves near the dam. The summer thermals from the southwest are reliable for long sessions.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate of La Grande-Motte offers hot and dry summers with temperatures around 25-30°C, and mild winters around 10-15°C. Thermal winds are regular in summer, while the Tramontane from the northwest blows strongly in autumn and winter. All seasons are suitable for kiting with a consistent score of 70/100.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand up to 50-100 meters from the shore depending on the tide, perfect for launching.

Water temperature

In summer, the water reaches 22-25°C, ideal without a wetsuit. In spring and autumn, expect 16-20°C, a shorty wetsuit is sufficient. In winter, it drops to 12-15°C, a 5/3 mm neoprene is recommended.
