Playa Riohacha
Colombia · La Guajira
Riohacha is the gateway to the La Guajira peninsula, one of the most iconic and wild territories in Colombia. Located by a vast bay lined with palm trees and golden sand, Playa Riohacha is a still little-known spot, but it offers excellent sailing conditions for those seeking consistent wind, space, and an authentic local atmosphere. It is a peaceful place where the sea meets the desert, frequented mainly by wayuu fishermen and a few experienced kitesurfers. You can find long empty beaches, magnificent sunsets, and a constant wind coming from the sea. Riohacha is also an excellent starting point for memorable downwinds to Mayapo or Cabo de la Vela.

The wind blows in a side-onshore (from the right) manner, stable and consistent for most of the year. The water surface is flat at low tide due to the shape of the bay, then becomes choppy at high tide with a slight chop. The space is immense and the launch is easy from the main beach, sandy and clear. The absence of relief around makes the wind laminar and clean. It is a perfect spot for freeride, learning, and long quiet runs offshore. Local schools welcome beginners with good supervision and recent equipment. Experienced riders will appreciate the total freedom of the water and the possibility of covering long distances.
