Brazil
Canoa Quebrada is one of the most iconic villages on the Brazilian coast. Perched atop spectacular red cliffs, overlooking a long stretch of golden sandy beach, Canoa offers a unique blend of raw nature and bohemian atmosphere. The main kite spot is located at the foot of the cliffs, on Praia de Canoa, just below the village. Here, the wind blows strong, the landscape is grand, and the sessions have a special flavor: you literally ride between cliffs, dunes, and the endless ocean. This is not a spot for seeking perfect flat water — but to experience a typically Brazilian visual and sensory experience. The constant wind, the color of the water, the evening light, and the silhouette of the cliffs create a backdrop of stunning beauty. Canoa is also a hub of local life: lively restaurants, sandy alleys, musical evenings… Kiting is practiced here in a relaxed atmosphere, with a touch of festive energy typical of the Nordeste.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
Praia de Canoa is an open ocean spot, oriented directly east. The side-onshore wind, from east to southeast, blows between 18 and 26 knots almost every day in season. The water is choppy, with small waves offshore (0.5 to 1.5 m depending on the tide). At low tide, the sea recedes and leaves a flatter strip of wet sand, ideal for fast freeriding. At high tide, the chop intensifies, adding relief and rhythm to the sessions. The sandy bottom ensures comfortable navigation, and the long and clear beach facilitates takeoff.
More experienced riders love to set off from here for downwinds to Fortim or Parajuru, along the red cliffs of the coast.
The scenery and sensations are an integral part of the session — here, we kite for the pleasure of the eyes as much as for the joy of riding.
Wind from east to southeast, side-onshore, constant between 18 and 25 knots. Ideal conditions for freeride, surfkite, and long downwinds.
Low tide: light choppy, flatter sections in front of the cliffs. Medium tide: regular choppy. High tide: small waves of 0.5 to 1.5 m, perfect for committed freeriding. The water remains readable and pleasant, even when the wind picks up. It is a “choppy/light wave” spot par excellence.
Current is weak to moderate, oriented towards the west, slightly enhanced by the tide. No major danger: the side-on wind always brings you back to the beach. The cliffs can create an aerological shadow effect in places, but the main area remains very clean.
Riders use kites ranging from 7 to 10 m² on average. Lighter riders can go down to 6 m², while heavier ones can go up to 11 m² depending on the day. The regular wind allows for riding without changing kites.
The air is dry, clouds are rare, and the heat is constant, always mitigated by a pervasive east breeze. The east to southeast wind, side-on, blows here between 18 and 26 knots with almost perfect regularity. It picks up in the late morning, becomes strong and stable between 12 PM and 5 PM, then softens before sunset. The relief of Canoa slightly channels the flow, creating a laminar and pleasant wind. The late afternoon sessions, when the light illuminates the red cliffs, are of absolute beauty.
Canoa Quebrada enjoys the same perfect climate as the entire Cearense coast: constant sun, wind, and heat from July to January. Temperatures range between 28°C and 33°C, rarely dropping below 25°C at night. Rain is very rare, and the sky remains blue for most of the year. The thermal wind, enhanced by the cliffs, makes the sessions even more regular and spectacular.
Between 0.5 and 2 meters, soft and homogeneous sandy bottom.
Between 27°C and 29°C all year round. Warm, clear, and inviting water — no wetsuit needed.
